Places to see in ( Vannes - France )
Vannes is a walled town in the Brittany region of northwest France. Its old town is characterized by narrow cobbled streets and medieval gates. At its heart, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes blends Romanesque and Gothic styles, while Place des Lices square is lined with colorful half-timber houses. The harbor, to the south, features restaurants and boats that cruise the Gulf of Morbihan.
Vannes is located on the Gulf of Morbihan at the mouth of two rivers, the Marle and the Vincin. It is around 100 kilometres (62 miles) northwest of Nantes and 450 km (280 mi) south west of Paris. Vannes is a market town and often linked to the sea.
What a beauty! Overlooking the Golfe du Morbihan, Vannes is one of the unmissable towns of Brittany. Spectacular fortifications encircle Vannes' meandering alleys and cobbled squares, and lead down to a sparkling marina lined with cafes and townhouses. The city still preserves much of its medieval atmosphere, but it's a long way from being a museum piece. It has a lively bar and restaurant scene year-round, and it's also an excellent base for exploring the glittering island-studded Golfe du Morbihan and nearby neolithic sites.
The name Vannes comes from the Veneti, a seafaring Celtic people who lived in the south-western part of Armorica in Gaul before the Roman invasions. The region seems to have been involved in a cross channel trade for thousands of years, probably using hide boats and perhaps Ferriby Boats. Wheat that apparently was grown in the Middle East was part of this trade. At about 150 BC the evidence of trade (such as Gallo-Belgic coins) with the Thames estuary area of Great Britain dramatically increased.

Cochem is the seat of and the biggest town in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
With just over 5,000 inhabitants, Cochem falls just behind Kusel, in the Kusel district, as Germany's second smallest district seat.
Since 7 June 2009, it has belonged to the Verbandsgemeinde of Cochem.
Cochem lies at an elevation of some 83 m above sea level and the municipal area measures 21.2 km².
The town centre with the outlying centre of Sehl upstream lies on the Moselle's left bank, while the constituent centre of Cond lies on its right.
As early as Celtic and Roman times, Cochem was settled.
In 886, it had its first documentary mention as Villa cuchema.
Cochem was an Imperial estate.
It was pledged by King Adolf of Nassau in 1294 to the Archbishopric of Trier and remained Electoral-Trier territory until the French occupation began in 1794.
In 1332, Cochem was granted town rights, and shortly thereafter, the town fortifications, which still stand today, were built.
Between 1423 and 1425, the town was stricken with a Plague epidemic.
In 1623, Elector Lothar von Metternich brought about the founding of a Capuchin monastery.
In the Thirty Years' War, the town was besieged, but not conquered.
In 1689, King Louis XIV's troops first burnt the Winneburg (castle) down and then conquered the town of Cochem with its castle.
Reconstruction was long and drawn out.
Beginning in 1794, Cochem lay under French rule.
In 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna.
Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené bought the ruin of the former Imperial castle in 1866 and began its reconstruction.
Only after a bridge was built across the Moselle at Cochem in 1927 were the two fishing villages of Cond and Sehl amalgamated with the town in the course of administrative reform in 1932.
This bridge, called the Skagerrak Bridge, was dedicated on 23 January 1927.
In the Second World War, great parts of Cochem's old town were destroyed.
Also during the war, the operations staff of the underground subcamp of Zeisig of the Natzweiler concentration camp between the villages of Bruttig and Treis was located here.
They provided slave labour for Bosch, which made spark plugs, ignition systems and glow plugs, which were important to the German war effort, under brutal conditions.
Since 1946, Cochem has been part of the then newly founded state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The Montjuic Cable Car is a cable car that leads to the mountain Barcelona Montjuic from the eastern slope. Despite its name, it is not really a gondola, but a gondola. On 16 May 2007 it was reopened after remodeling. At present the company is managed by TMB. The cable car has three stations: Park of Montjuic (with correspondence to the Funicular de Montjuic ), Bay or Miramar and Castillo.
From the cable car it can be seen throughout Barcelona and several of its most important sites, such as the Plaza Catalunya, the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia, the cruise ship docked at the Port of Barcelona, the Barcelona Olympic Village, the Agbar Tower The area of the Forum.
A cable car is a ski cabin characterized by the fact that they are in contact with one or two support cables that do not move and another tractor. The cabins do not realize closed circuit but always coming and going through the same corner, having upper and lower stations a parking space reserved for each. The cable that pulls the same, so that the weight of a help to lower the other to rise. This means therefore that the tractor cable (which booths are always linked) stops moving on to reach the terminals.
Usually has a porch that makes intermediate pylon to hold all its cables, but is not essential. Therefore allows saving steep slopes and lights. In addition, the presence of two cables support gives a great wind resistance. The capacity of the cabins (and therefore the performance of the lift) is highly variable and can range from a few dozen to 200 people, with two floors and everything. Their hourly maximum capacity is around 2,000 persons / hour.
A system with one long, continuous rotating cable hanging where the cabins. Sometimes these can be disconnected at the stations in order to facilitate entry and exit can be. The number, function and features may vary according to local needs or design. For example one rope can act simultaneously by carrying and drawing grippers or they can be two carrying cables. In the past, systems were built with double track ropes. The carrying cables are normally of the closed type, with smooth outer surface to favor the sliding of the trolley vehicle, while the other may present different profiles. The slings are closed by a process of splice.
Even in cable cars equipped with a single cabin - for reasons of saving on operating costs and maintenance - is almost always necessary a vehicle ballast to compensate for the mass and the dynamic behavior. The cable cars to two cabins and steep slopes can take advantage of a system called jig-back which, by exploiting the gravitational force acting on the cabin down, facilitates the rise of the other, thereby greatly reducing the energy required. A similar solution is used in the funicular railways.
Plants suitable for the transport of goods are known as cable car ; among people linked to their development include the ' engineer Fleeming Jenkin. In cave or similar structures can find embodiment the blondin, where the loading and unloading of the transported is automatic or semi-automatic. For their high energy efficiency, relatively low environmental impact and by improving the materials used - both metallic and synthetic - in addition to the advent of electronics, the cable cars are experiencing a powerful growth not only as a classic ski lifts but also for different uses, including urban transport.
The major manufacturers can be traced back to two multinational groups: the Italian Leitner of Vipiteno and the Austrian company Doppelmayr.
The Swiss Von Roll Ltd. and Garaventa - were bought by the multinational Doppelmayr, the French Poma group Leitner. In Italy we also remember the Ceretti & Tanfani of Milan, the Agudio of Turin (from 2002 in the group Leitner), the Hoelzl (in the field of cable cars to and fro) and Agamatic (in the branch of automatic couplings), both of Wool Adige, Italy now become Doppelmayr. Also they operate several companies of components for the construction and laying of cables, cabinets, electrical and electronic equipment and various equipment.
The cables are a cable strung between two stations and can be supported online by pylons, usually metal mesh. It also happens that the scope is performed without intermediate supports - the only control points are the two ends of the cable.
