Creugas and Damoxenos of Antonio Canova just restored in Vatican Museums (manortiz)
Antonio Canova, Creugante e Damosseno
Creugas and Damoxenos the neo-classical works of Antonio Canova just restored in Vatican Museums
Thanks to the California Patrons, the formidable statues of Creugas and Damoxenos have retaken their place of honor flanking the statue of Perseus in the Octagonal Courtyard of the Vatican Museums. Antonio Canova (1757-1822 ), the great Venetian sculptor, loved classical subjects and is revered as the master of neoclassic sculpture with a contemporary flair. He studied the works of Pausanias (110- 180), a Greek geographer who recorded his observations from his travels in ten books called Descriptions of Greece. Canova was taken with the legend of two boxers named Creugas of Durres and Damoxenos of Syracuse. The two athletes met at the Nemean Games and faced off in an epic competition. The powerful men battled for hours and neither could get the advantage over the other. After several hours of boxing without a winner, Creugas and Damoxenos decided to settle the competition by each man delivering one undefended blow to the other. In Greek boxing, fighters focused on punching the head. Going first, Creugas struck Damoxenos a strong blow to the head but did not finish him. Then, Damoxenos, who had opted to go second, thrust his extended fingers directly into Creugas’ side, through his ribcage, tearing out his intestines. As a result, the judges disqualified Damoxenos for killing Creugas and Creugas was declared the winner— posthumously. Canova developed the preliminary drawings for the two statues in 1795. He carved the larger than life size statues over the next few years, finishing Creugas in 1801 and Damoxenos in 1806. Canova choose to portray Creugas with his arms raised, ready for the blow and Damoxenos prepared to lunge forward with his knife-like hand. Pope Pius VII (1742-1823) purchased the two pugilists along with the statue of Perseus as part of his effort to restore masterpieces to the Vatican Collection after the French army had looted the collection in 1798. Restorer Andreas Felice headed the project of inspecting and refreshing the pugilist statues. He conducted scientific research on the pieces, ensured that the bases remained sound and stable, and repaired cracks and fissures. He carefully cleaned the marble surfaces, maintaining the beautiful natural patina of the works. Now the two works face off again in the Octagonal Courtyard, restored to their powerful and terrifying glory.

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Baeza Old Town
Baeza formerly also written as Baéza, is an Andalusian town in the province of Jaén in southern Spain. It lies perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, the range separating the Guadalquivir River to its south from the Guadalimar to its north. It is now principally famed for having some of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. Along with Úbeda, it was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2003. The former Visigothic bishopric of Baeza remains a Latin Catholic titular see.
The former Baeza Cathedral is built over a former mosque. It was first used in Christian service in the 12th century during Castile's first period of rule. It was then used as a mosque before its reconquest in the 13th century. The most ancient parts are the cubic base of the bell tower and three (presently hidden) Islamic arches. Most of the present Renaissance-influenced Gothic structure—including the nave with two aisles, pilasters, and crossed vaults—dates to around 1529. The tower was redone in 1549 and the Chapel of St Michael was added in 1560. Construction was completed under Andrés de Vandelvira.
Town Hall (Ayuntamiento), a Plateresque building originally built as a combined courthouse and prison, leading to two separate main entrances. Baeza University, established in 1533. Santa Cruz Church, a Romanesque church with a two-aisle nave and semicircular apse. A side wall incorporates a Visigothic arch. St Paul's Church, a Gothic church with a Renaissance portal with a two-aisle nave and Gothic chapels. Includes the tomb of Pablo de Olavide.
Baeza is 327 km (203 mi) south of Madrid by highway. The Linares–Baeza RENFE railway station is 15 km (9 mi) away to the southwest; it lies on the Linares-Almeria line. There are bus connections to Granada, Málaga, and Madrid. Granada (132 km or 82 mi) and Málaga (241 km or 150 mi) are the nearest international airports.
