Volunteering in Bangkok (& Somali Food for World Refugee Day 2015)

Just after getting back from our trip to Malaysia (lots of videos from Penang to come soon), I hung out with my friend Dwight Turner for the day. Dwight and I have been friends in Bangkok for many years, and he’s the founder of In Search of Sanuk, a non-profit organization that helps people through having fun, and sometimes through food.
One of his biggest projects is a Saturday project where he and a number of volunteers help teach kids and do activities with them. Some kids learned English while others played games and did crafts. But the highlight of the day was cooking, and it’s something many of the kids really enjoy doing and learning. Many of the kids in this area don’t know about proper nutrition or or even proper ways to cook food, and so one of Dwight biggest project is bringing food into the equation.
On this day volunteering in Bangkok, the kids cooked spring rolls. The spring rolls included cabbage, carrots, and a mixture of vegetables, all wrapped up, and deep fried to a golden crisp. Once all the spring rolls were fried, we ate lunch together with all the kids - we ate spring rolls, eggs, and rice.
After hanging out for more of the morning and into the middle of the afternoon. Dwight and I returned to his house where he cooked up some mackerel which he had in the fridge and which needed to be eaten. The mackerel, cooked up with tomato sauce, was excellent.
For dinner, in honor of World Refugee Day 2015, we went to a venue in Bangkok that was hosting a refugee dinner to raise money. There were many types of food available including Somali food and plenty of people selling Pakistani food. I enjoyed a delicious bowl of Pakistani mutton leg stew with naan, some different types of kebabs, and a big plate mixture of Somali food.
It was a wonderful day in Bangkok, Thailand, first volunteering with Dwight, then going to the a World Refugee Day 2015 food fundraiser.

Monday after The Poker Run
A very successful Poker Run put on by some fantastic volunteers! Thanks to everyone who participated and to the organizers. Everyone had a great time. The Kelly Shires run was a success as well.
The Dorset Snowball Winter carnival is on this weekend, starting Friday night and running through Saturday afternoon. Sunday there will be a family Bar B Que hosted by the Algonquin Snowmobile Club at the Shelter on D101B and Trail 65.
Next weekend will be the Dwight Winter Carnival at the Dwight Rec Center and Dwight Beach.

This is a great little hotel off the strip. We stayed there three times now. The rooms were clean n each room we stayed at. Newly tiled floors in a 60's style setting. Its got the Vegas vibe, postcard style pool and garden area and is well kept. Besides and your car is right in front of your door.
