Tulip Garden in Ebikon, near Lucerne, Switzerland
Tulips are an iconic symbol of spring time and new growth as the dormant bulbs anxiously sprout at the first signs of warmth and sun. The beautiful tulips you see in this video are in Ebikon near Lucerne, Switzerland. While tulips, which are native to central Asia, come in a variety of colors as you see here, the original plants were only in hues of yellows and reds. The fancy painted tulips and other colors that are widely available today are all hybrids.
While tulips are a symbol of springtime for many, they also make something of the economy. Tulips reached a high level of fame in Holland in the 1600’s. The tulips were a hot commodity as French merchants liked to give them to their wives. They became so popular that a single tulip bulb could sell for ten times as much as the wages of a skilled craftsman. They became a status symbol of power and wealth. Eventually, the tulip price bubble burst. This event did not have huge economic impacts on the Dutch, but it is noted as the first speculative bubble. Today you may hear the term tulip mania, which originated from this even. However, the term is now used to describe any large economic bubble, which, these days, does not usually include tulips.
If you want to plant your own tulip garden, it is simple. You need to seek out bulbs that are frim and have a papery outer layer. To find the best bulbs, it is smart to buy them in the fall and plant them in mid-fall or even early winter. Planting them at this time ensures that they do not sprout too early and then freeze in the winter months. Tulips thrive in locations with lots of sun and good soil drainage. You don’t want your tulip bulbs to become soggy. When planting the bulbs, you want to place them 20 cm under the surface of the garden. Adding compost or some type of fertilizer to the surrounding dirt will help them grow. Space them about 5 cm apart and make sure that the pointy end of the bulb is facing up. We wish you happy gardening and many tulips!
