The tallest structure in the city is the Basilica of San Gaudenzio, the spire of which reaches 400 feet in height.

This beautiful domed church was built over 113 years and was completed in 1690; the magnificent cupola was built later in 1887.

The basilica was named in honor of, and is consecrated to, Novara's first bishop.

It was built on the same site as the city's old basilica, which was was destroyed on the orders of Emperor Charles V.

The Basilica of San Gaudenzio is Novara's chief monument and people come to visit it from all over.

A warm but beautiful afternoon took us to [Sacro Monte di Orta]....

Flying my DJI Phantom 4 drone was perfectly permissible. But this is a religious cultural site of major importance. Many of the visitors consider it as a revered and a very spiritual place. Thus I flew only a short duration flight at an altitude that would not disturb, over the site itself, simply out of respect.

You will notice I did incorporate a few stills to give you an abridged idea of the beautiful artwork that the 20 chapels house in projects of varying stages of restoration.

At the end of the video you can see the Villa Crespi with its Moorish Tower, the incredible place we stayed, right next door to this lovely and memorable hill.

The Sacro Monte di Orta is a Roman Catholic devotional complex in the comune of Orta San Giulio on the summit of a hill known as San Nicolao, which faces the western shore of Lake Orta. It is one of the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy, included in UNESCO World Heritage list.

Construction of the complex, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, began in 1583. The project by the Capuchin friar Cleto da Castelletto Ticino involved 36 chapels, of which only 20 were built. Until 1630 they were mostly in the Mannerist style, but from the mid-17th century Baroque and other influences predominated. Construction ended in 1788.
