Hainaut is a province of Wallonia and Belgium. To its south lies the French department of Nord, while within Belgium it borders on the Flemish provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant and the Walloon provinces of Walloon Brabant and Namur. Its capital is Mons and the most populous city is Charleroi, the province's urban, economic and cultural hub, the financial capital of Hainaut and the fifth largest city in the country by population.

  • 1. Neolithic Flint Mines at Spiennes (Mons) Mons
    The Neolithic flint mines of Spiennes are among the largest and earliest Neolithic flint mines which survive in north-western Europe, located close to the Walloon village of Spiennes, southeast of Mons, Belgium. The mines were active during the mid and late Neolithic between 4,300 and 2,200 BC. Declared to be remarkable for the diversity of technological solutions used for extraction the site and its surroundings were inducted into the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2000.
