THE YUKON, CANADA - PART 1
I don’t know why but I’ve always had this strange attraction with the Yukon. I think it has something to do with being so inconsequentially small in such a vast place.
So, when the Canadian tourist board approached me for their Canada City Bloggers Programme, I knew there was only one place I wanted to visit – Whitehorse and the Yukon.
While in Whitehorse I wanted to pack in as much as possible and get into the great outdoors that Canada's so famous for, so I went kayaking on the Yukon River, hiking at Miles Canyon and I ended my trip flying over the glacier at Kluane National Park, without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the Yukon.
The best thing with a town like Whitehorse is there’s so much to see and do just 10 minutes from the centre, and being in such close proximity to the outdoors with the Yukon River running through the heart of it, it is an adventure playground for adults.

YUKON ROAD TRIP - Driving The Golden Circle Route
We spent 7 days driving the world famous Golden Circle Route in the Yukon, one of the best road trips in Canada.
Starting in Whitehorse we headed to Haines Junction, using the beautiful Mount Logan Lodge as our base and hiking around the area. One of the highlights was taking a scenic flight over Kluane National Park!
Afterwards it was onto Haines in Alaska. This part of the drive is stunning, and we had the chance to see grizzly bears feeding on salmon in one of the local rivers.
Across to Skagway, we jumped onboard the historical White Pass and Yukon Route train high into the mountains. Leaving Skagway was like driving across another planet, and we landed in Carcross and stayed at the Southern Lakes Resort.
After exploring the First Nations art in town and wandering around the Carcross Desert, it was time to finish our trip back in Whitehorse.

Alaska 2018 - 10 [Haines Junction to Fairbanks, border crossing, solar update!]

Because Kevin had some work to do and the weather was going to be crappy we decided to push through to Fairbanks.
The drive was beautiful, again. Mountains and rivers. Some of the rivers were still iced up quite a bit.
Border Crossing
The road before and after the border crossing was terrible! Loads of frost heaves. One even yanked out the lights cable from the RV to the car.
So far, this was the easiest land crossing we’ve had into the U.S. It was quick and the border patrol agent shared a bunch of helpful information about what to expect coming up. And we didn’t get searched. There was no line. We talk more about the border crossing right after it happened.
Wildlife tally
3 moose and a bunny
The first two moose we saw was a mom and baby. Sadly we couldn’t get a pic of the baby. Then further down the road, we saw another single moose. And we got video of that one. I also saw a bunny that was dark on top and white underneath.
Fun fact: the average moose has a pint of blood a day taken by mosquitos.
Wallydocking
We’ve been parked at the Walmart in Fairbanks. They have a couple dozen RV spots. So far it’s been busy but not packed out. Maybe a dozen RVs have been here each night. If you need an oil change for your RV, the auto center here has larger bays and will do it.
Solar update
The solar install has been awesome! So far we haven’t had to use our generator. The batteries haven’t been below 70%. And since they’re lithium we can actually take them down to 20% if we need to.
We haven’t been conserving our power usage at all. We use the coffee grinder and pot, the microwave, the induction plate, and the instant pot whenever we want. If we’re home, the router is on and we’ve got our devices plugged in.

Canada: Kluane National Park, Yukon Territory
A flight into the interior of the St. Elias Mountain Range in Kluane National Park and Reserve reveals magnificent rivers of ice and the spectacular scenery of the Kaskawulsh Glacier. Pilot Andy Williams of Icefield Ranges Expeditions lands us on the Seward Glacier for an up close and personal view of majestic Mt. Logan, Canada's highest mountain. This trip, into the southwest corner of Canada's Yukon Territory, ranks as one of my all-time favourite experiences. Home to Canada's highest mountains and biggest glaciers, Kluane encompasses the largest non-polar icefield in the world and has a diversity of plant and wild life. These factors resulted in the park being one of the first places designated a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. We were based in Haines Junction and while exploring the lakes and rivers in and around the park, visited an aboriginal fishing village and had a few wildlife encounters. Norman Wells to Whitehorse
Norman Wells to Whitehorse - April 1 and 2, 2017.
With most of the packing taking place after midnight, we were able to get about three hours of sleep :) We woke up early to finish loading the truck, strap everything down, and depart Norman Wells by 7am on April 1. Everything we owned was in the back of our 2002 Ford F-150 (minus a dirt bike and a quad).
The winter road to Tulita was fairly rough and the slowest going portion of our whole trip. Things smoothed out a bit after the Deline access road and it was pretty easy sailing until closer to Wrigley. Cooler temps the previous night and throughout the morning definitely helped keep the majority of the road firm and in good shape. Hats off to the road crews for keeping conditions passable so late into the season. Due tithe warming temps, the last 45 minutes before Wrigley was dicey! Many deep ruts and drifting around in the mud! Had to focus on the road here so we didn't get any footage unfortunately haha. We made it into Wrigley before noon that day. Less than 24 hours later, the winter road officially closed for the season. Things got too warm and the road couldn't handle any more abuse! We made it out just in time!
After fueling up in Wrigley we headed on to Fort Simpson. The all season road was in excellent shape and very smooth, even better shape than the Alaska Highway I would say. We would spend the night in Fort Simpson and prepare for an even earlier departure the following morning.
We were on the road at 5am on April 2. Smooth going brought us South into Northern BC, fueling in Fort Liard along the way. Shortly after we reached the junction of the Alaska Highway and turned West.
With the beautiful snow capped Rockies ahead of us we approached Stone Mountain Provincial Park where the hill climbs started. Nothing too steep but a good dose of speed at the bottom definitely helped a fully loaded truck with an occasional misfire lol. I should mention the excellent cinnamon buns to be had at the Tetsa River Lodge before getting too deep into the Rockies. Located at mile 375, they bake a mean, sticky-gooey-mess.
Next came Muncho Lake and the Liard River Hot Springs. Even though we were rushing to get to Whitehorse before dark, we took a brief, much-needed soak. The facilities are excellent and the hot springs had a great atmosphere. Our sore rear ends were thankful! We highly recommend this stop.
Refreshed for the final push we headed off again, stopping next in Watson Lake for gas and a bite to eat at Kathy's Kitchen. Onward to Teslin we went, and finally Whitehorse. We even made it well before dark, arriving in town around 8pm. Google maps shows 1,378km at 23 hours from Fort Simpson to Whitehorse... it was a solid 15 hours for us including the stops. But we had get there itis. A more realistic day of driving, taking time to enjoy what you want along the way would be to start from Fort Nelson, BC instead of Fort Simpson, NT like we did.
Although we were rushed, the drive was amazing and we did our best to take as much in as we could. We made the video to give us something to look back on down the road, pun intended :).

Top of the world Highway in Yukon, Canada
Top of the world Highway (Yukon Highway 9) is a 127-kilometre (79 mi) long highway, beginning at a junction with the Taylor Highway near Jack Wade, to the ferry terminal in West Dawson, Yukon. The highway has been in existence since at least 1955 and is only open during the summer months. Aug, 7, 2015
Whitehorse, Yukon (ALASKA HIGHWAY) // Tips + Things to Do
It took a little time for the Yukon capital to grow on me but in the end I was in love with this town and didn't want to leave. I think I expected a little more quaintness to it, but honestly, its ruggedness is what makes it so rad. Whitehorse is a really incredible outdoor and foodie town. With more than 2,000 kilometers of trails and every artisan food you can imagine, Whitehorse is an essential stop on Alaska Highway!

Alaska 2018 - 2 [crossing into Canada - Marysville, WA to Prince George, BC]

We overnighted at the Walmart in Prince George. They ask that you park your RV along the outer wall. That Walmart had some organics, tofu, and vegan meats.
The border crossing into Canada at Sumas was no problem. They didn’t ask about food. They only asked about alcohol, weapons, and what we did for work. Oh, and that we had enough money. So far we’ve never had a problem getting into Canada or Mexico. It’s getting back into the U.S. that’s fun. We’ll see what happens in Alaska.
The Super Duper gas station right before crossing the border has propane for $1.79/gallon. Gas was around $2.40/gallon.
We use the Gas Buddy app to find the best gas prices. For this leg of the trip, it was at Lhtako Gas & Convenience Store, a full-service First Nations gas station.
Such beautiful scenery, especially between Hope and Cache Creek. We even got to see rafters taking on the Fraser River!
