Hardanger is a traditional district in the western part of Norway, dominated by the Hardangerfjord and its inner branches of the Sørfjorden and the Eid Fjord. It consists of the municipalities of Odda, Ullensvang, Eidfjord, Ulvik, Granvin, Kvam, and Jondal, and is located inside the county of Hordaland. In the early Viking Age, before Harald Fairhair, Hardanger was a petty kingdom with its capital at Kinsarvik. The area is dominated by the vast Hardangervidda plateau in the east and the large Folgefonna glacier on the central Folgefonna peninsula. The district was selected as the millennium site for Hordaland county.

  • 1. Latefossen Odda
    Låtefossen or Låtefoss is a waterfall located in the municipality of Odda in Hordaland County, Norway. The 165-metre tall waterfall is unique and thus it is a well-known tourist attraction in the area. It is special in that it consists of two separate streams flowing down from the lake Lotevatnet, and as they fall, the join together in the middle of the waterfall, just before going under the Norwegian National Road 13, making for a spectacular view as one drives over the old, stone, six-arched bridge.

  • 2. Buarbreen Odda
    Buarbreen or Buerbreen is a glacier in the municipality of Odda in Hordaland county, Norway. It is an offshoot of the large Folgefonna glacier. The small glacial arm reaches down into the Buerdalen valley, just 6 kilometres southwest of the town of Odda. The glacier is split into two parts, one on either side of a small mountain peak. Both sides drain into the Jordalselvi river which flows out through the valley into the lake Sandvinvatnet.

    Finse is a mountain village area on the shore of the lake Finsevatnet in Ulvik municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is centered on Finse Station, a railway station on the Bergen Line. The village sits at an elevation of 1,222 metres above sea level, making it the highest station on the entire Norwegian railway system. The village lies in the eastern part of Ulvik municipality, and it is not easily accessible from the rest of the municipality. There is no road access, only a railway stop. The long Finse Tunnel lies just west of the village area, replacing a difficult section of rail that frequently was blocked by snow and difficult to clear. According to the BBC, the village was used for expedition training by Amundsen Scott and Shackleton.

    Kvamskogen is a mountain plateau in the Hardanger region of Hordaland county, Norway. It is located in the municipalities of Samnanger and Kvam. Traditionally, the term was used only for the parts of the plateau located in Kvam municipality, but today it is used for the entire plateau. Kvamskogen contains several ski resorts, and more than 1700 cabins, the third highest concentration of cabins in the country.

  • 14. Sysenvatnet Eidfjord
    Sysenvatnet is a lake in the municipality of Eidfjord in Hordaland county, Norway. The 10.24-square-kilometre lake lies at the north end of the Sysendalen valley, about 8 kilometres east of the famous Vøringfossen waterfall. The lake is dammed on the south end by a large stone embankment, and the lake is used as the main reservoir for the Sima Hydroelectric Power Station. The Sysen Dam can be easily seen from Norwegian National Road 7, which runs near the southern shore of the lake.
