►Synopsis：

EPA Minister burns incense in temple, quashing speculation about a ban

To quash speculation that the government is planning an outright ban on incense burning, EPA Minister Lee Ying-yuan today paid a visit to Longshan Temple, where he prayed and offered an incense stick. Lee stressed that temples across Taiwan were all independent and self-governing with the right to make decisions on banning incense burning, amid concerns about air pollution. As he bowed in a display of devout worship, EPA Minister Lee Ying-yuan held a stick of incense, a move aimed at stamping out speculation that the government is planning to ban incense burning altogether. In fact, in 2014, Xingtian Temple banned incense burning over air pollution concerns, and this year in June Longshan Temple imposed strict limits on this religious practice. After we reduced our number of censers on June 16th, our worshippers did not decrease at all, and have in fact increased. Although Longshan Temple authorities and Lee Ying-yuan stressed there were no plans to impose an outright ban on incense burning, it still has not stopped religious protesters from believing that Longshan’s plan to reduce incense burning is tantamount to a ban. It is still difficult for Taiwanese society to find a balance between religious traditions and environmental protection.
