TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA - After an outstanding Malaysian street food tour in Terengganu the day before, the next day we took a day trip to Kuala Berang, a city of Terengganu known again for their tempoyak (fermented durian paste).
As you may know by now, I’m more than a little obsessed with tempoyak.
Restoran Aroma Kampung - We started the morning with breakfast at Restoran Aroma Kampung known for their freshwater catfish curry with tempoyak. We also ordered pretty much all the other dishes they offered, and the food was spectacular.
Total price - 40 MYR ($9.81)
Warisan Pahlawan Resort - But the real highlight of Malay food for the day was going to Warisan Pahlawan Resort where the Aunty is known as one of the best local food cooks in Kuala Berang. Again, she prepared for us local Malaysian food from Kuala Berang, nearly everything dish including huge amounts of fermented durian paste (tempoyak). It was a Malaysian meal of my dreams. She also wanted to cook for us a dish of bilimbi fruit, simmered with coconut milk, which was incredible.
This home-cooked village meal in Terengganu was one of the best meals of this trip to Malaysia. I loved the herbs, the Vietnamese coriander, the torch ginger, and of course, the fermented durian paste.

Kenyir Lake - Tourist Attractions in Malaysia
Tasik Kenyir or Kenyir Lake is an artificial lake located in the state of Terengganu in northeast Malaysia created in 1985 by the damming of the Kenyir River to create the Sultan Mahmud Power Station. It is the largest man-made lake in South East Asia.
Although an artificial lake, the area has been successfully developed for eco-tourism, and there are many resorts around its shores. Fishing is popular, as are jungle treks, waterfalls and caves. According to the locals, the best season for fishing is August when the water level is lower. Popular spots for jungle trekking are Pengkalan Gawi, Bewah at National Park, along the rivers of Saok, Lasir, Tembat and Lawit. Kayaking, canoeing, boating, rafting and rapids shooting are among the many water sport activities available here.

ROTI JOHN - epic MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD sandwich in KUALA LUMPUR | Food and Travel Channel | Malaysia

When in Malaysia, you must sample Roti John, a MALAYSIAN STRET FOOD which is both popular and tasty! We sample Roti John at Roti John Titiwangsa arguably one of the best Roti John stalls in Kuala Lumpur. Roti John is basically an omelette sandwich. A soft baguette or French stick is halved and slapped onto egg which is cooking on the grill which then coats the bread. The eggy bread is then filled with shredded cabbage, mayonnaise, a protein of your choice such as tuna, chicken, and beef, cheese and a range of other condiments. The sandwich is then cut into pieces and topped with fries. SO. GOOD.
How does it get its name? The story goes that in the 1960s an Englishman asked for a burger from a hawker. With no burgers on offer the hawker crafted a sandwich filled with mutton, eggs and onion. All foreigners were referred to as ‘John’ and so he handed the sandwich to ‘John’ saying: Here’s your roti, John” and voila! The Roti John was born.
A must try when in Malaysia!
