Places to see in ( Lubeck - Gremany ) Heiligen Geist Hospital
The Heiligen-Geist-Hospital on Koberg in Lübeck, built in 1286, is one of the oldest existing social institutions in the world and one of the most important buildings in the city. It is in the tradition of the Holy Spirit hospitals modeled after Santo Spirito in Sassia in Rome . The hospitals were supervised by the brothers of the Order of the Holy Spirit .
After the merchant Bertram Morneweg had returned from Riga , where he is said to have traded, to Lübeck , he was among other rich merchants one of the co-founders and first head of the Holy Spirit Hospital, which was built in the style of brick Gothic . The hospital included many estates in and around Lübeck, whose income was sufficient to provide for the poor and the sick and to support other institutions. These included until after the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 and the hospital villages in Mecklenburg as Warnkenhagen (district of Kalkhorst ), Old Bukowand Krumbrook at Hohen Schönberg (district of Kalkhorst) and part of the island of Poel : Brandenhusen, Neuhof, Seedorf, Wangern, Weitendorf. In Holstein the hospital included the villages Böbs and Schwochel .
In 1935, in anticipation of the expected territorial reorganization ( Greater Hamburg Act ) and the associated endangerment of the Lübeck exclaves to a trade in goods: The city received the previously belonging to the hospital, located within the city limits goods Mönkhof and Falkenhusen, and the Holy Foundation -Geist-Hospital received in return the goods Behlendorf (259 ha ), Albsfelde (123 ha) and the Behlendorfer See (70 ha).
During the Reformation , the hospital was converted into a secular old people's home, which has been preserved to this day. Originally, the beds of the hospital residents stood in the hall. In the 18th century, the first and second floors served as a hospital. In 1820, four square meters of wooden chambers were built, separated by sex. The departments are open at the top. There are two longitudinal passages between the rows of adjoining chambers. There was also a small library and pharmacy. At the doors of the chambers you can still see names and numbers of the former inhabitants. Until 1970, the chambers were inhabited.
The Holy Spirit Hospital is a foundation under public law and is administered in trust by the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The foundation acquired in 2007 parts of the former Gertrude hostel back to save it as a memorial. Even today, the Holy Spirit Hospital is in parts a retirement and nursing home , on the south side, historic rooms are also used as a restaurant. There, the path leads into the Bürgergärten behind the Königstraße to the garden side of the Museum Behnhaus .
