Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany )
Places to see in ( Kassel - Germany )
Kassel is a city in central Germany. It's known for its Documenta art exhibition. Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a sprawling park dating back to the 18th century. It's home to Wilhelmshöhe Palace and its Old Masters Picture Gallery. The neo-Gothic Löwenburg castle displays 16th- and 17th-century weapons. The Herkules Monument offers city views from atop the baroque Wasserspiele water features, which cascade down a hill.
Although wartime bombing and postwar reconstruction left Kassel looking undeniably utilitarian, you'd hardly know it today. Visitors to this culture-rich, sprawling hub on the Fulda River will discover a pleasant, modern city with a number of interesting and unusual museums and a one-of-a-kind baroque park – Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe – which boasts a handsome palace with a priceless art collection and the gargantuan Herkules statue and Wasserspiel (water feature). Kassel is a university town, attracting a vibrant young population that keeps the nightlife and culture vital. Invest the time to explore it's widely dispersed attractions, and you won't be disappointed.
Kassel has been first mentioned around 900 AD. Since then it has always been a provincial capital for the realms of North Hesse or Kur-Hesse. During the 30 years war Kassels Landgraf Philipp declared for the protestants. This had an effect as later numerous Hugenots emigrated from France and brought with them their trade and skills. The impact of the Hugenots can still be witnessed in the centre of Kassel where streets are named after Hugenots.
Kassel became a considerable industrial and scientific city as can still be seen in the Orangerie museum where loads of scientific kit from the enlightenment period is on show. Noticeably the first steam pot producing a fountain was constructed in Kassel by Papin and rumors have it that he left Kassel in his steam boat a few years before James Watt got his prototype into shape.
Kassel was already a heavy industries site by WW2, where trains, tanks and planes were constructed. In the later years of World War II Kassel was thoroughly bombed by English and American planes.
Kassel was home to the Grimm Brothers who collected, edited and published the folk tales made famous by Disney cartoons. Their work is documented in the GRIMMWELT museum.

Ludwigslust Palace Schloss Ludwigslust 20160618
Ludwigslust Palace Schloss Ludwigslust
Ludwigslust Palace is a stately home or schloss in the town of Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany. It was built as a hunting lodge, rebuilt as a luxurious retreat from the ducal capital, Schwerin, then became for a time (1765–1837) the center of government. It was the joy of Prince Christian Ludwig, the son of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, hence the name Ludwigslust.
Ludwigslust is a central castle town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, 40 km south of Schwerin. Since 2011 it is part of the Ludwigslust-Parchim district.
Ludwigslust is part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The former royal residential town is known for its rich heritage, especially the famed Ludwigslust Palace, that is also called Versailles of the North.
In 1724 Prince Ludwig, the son of Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, decided to build a hunting lodge near a small hamlet called Klenow. Later on, after his succession to the Dukedom, this became his favourite residence and he named it accordingly Ludwigslust (Ludwig's pleasure/desire). In 1765 Ludwigslust became the capital of the duchy in place of Schwerin. The town was enlarged by a residential palace (the castle). This situation continued until 1837, when Grand Duke Paul Friedrich returned the capital status to Schwerin.
The Wöbbelin concentration camp—sometimes referred to as Ludwigslust concentration camp—was established by the SS near the city of Ludwigslust in 1945. At the end of World War II, as the Line of contact between Soviet and other Allied forces formed, Ludwigslust was captured by British troops initially, then handed over to American troops. After several months the US troops departed and allowed Soviet troops to enter per the Yalta agreement designating the occupation of Mecklenburg to be administered by the Soviets.

FANTASTIC visit of a life-time, to a fairy-tale palace on Lake Schwerin, Germany, and was a visit to the ancestral home of the 3rd great-grandmother of a close friend of ours. This was a shore excursion on Aug. 31, 2018, while cruising the Baltic Sea aboard the Regal Princess.

Places to see in ( Weimar - Germany ) Schlossmuseum
Schloss Weimar is a Schloss (palace) in Weimar, Thuringia, Germany. It is now called Stadtschloss to distinguish it from other palaces in and around Weimar. It was the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach, and has also been called Residenzschloss. Names in English include Palace at Weimar, Grand Ducal Palace, City Palace and City Castle. The building is located at the north end of the town's park along the Ilm river, Park an der Ilm. It forms part of the World Heritage Site Classical Weimar.
In history, it was often destroyed by fire. The Baroque palace from the 17th century, with the church Schlosskirche where a number of works by Johann Sebastian Bach were premiered, was replaced by a Neoclassical structure after a fire in 1774. Four rooms were dedicated to the memory of poets who worked in Weimar, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schiller and Christoph Martin Wieland. From 1923, the building has housed the Schlossmuseum, a museum with a focus on paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries and works of art related to Weimar, a cultural centre.
The building has been developed over the past 500 years. The first building on the site was a medieval moated castle, which was first documented at the end of the 10th century. After a fire in 1424, and again from the mid-16th century, when Weimar became the permanent residence of the dukes, it was remodelled. After another fire in 1618, reconstruction began in 1619 planned by the Italian architect Giovanni Bonalino. The church was completed in 1630, where several works by Johann Sebastian Bach were premiered between 1708 and 1717. In the 1650s Johann Moritz Richter was engaged by Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar to modify the design to a symmetrical Baroque structure with three wings, open to the south. After Wilhelm's death in 1662, the new building became known as the Wilhelmsburg; the chapel was called the Himmelsburg.
The building has been used as a museum since 1923. The Schlossmuseum presents exhibitions focused on paintings from 1500 to 1900 related to the history of Weimar. The ground floor holds paintings of the Renaissance, especially works by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger, and medieval sacred art, the upper floor displays paintings of Goethe's period in representative rooms, and the top floor contains works of the 19th-century Weimarer Malerschule (de) (Weimar School) and contemporary art.

Potsdam, Germany - The Orangery Palace in Sansoucci Park
The Orangery Palace is one of several palaces in Sansoucci Park, in the city of Potsdam, Germany. It was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV (Frederick William IV of Prussia) & work began in 1851 and completed in 1864. The so-called Versailles of Germany (Sansoucci Palace) is also located within the park, along with other similar structures such as the Neues Palais (New Palace) and the Chinese House, a garden pavilion.
There was much restoration work going on at the Orangery (also known as New Orangery on the Klausberg), so we were unable to go inside some of the structures, but the beautiful day lessened our disappointment with the grand outside views of the palace and the equally grand garden views.
When we first arrived we began our stroll at the historic (wind) mill and also ended our walk there before we continued on to see the other palaces in the park. The mill, known as Historische Mühle, in German was based on a legend known as The Miller of Sanssouci & was built in 1737. It was much fun to visit, as well.
