The population density is 7.84 inhabitants per square kilometre . Neighbouring municipalities are Jämsä, Multia, Mänttä-Vilppula, Petäjävesi, Virrat and Ähtäri. The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The municipality of Pihlajavesi was consolidated with Keuruu in 1969.
