MOVED TO TEARS IN ANTWERP, BELGIUM (LONELY PLANET BEST IN TRAVEL 2018) | Eileen Aldis
Antwerp, Belgium has been named one of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for Best In Travel 2018. After visiting this historic Belgian city, Marc and I aren't surprised at all. When we decided to go there, we didn't know what to expect and were taken by surprise. We thought Antwerp had a lot to offer and wished we had more time there. The people were friendly, the buildings beautiful, and the food delicious. We started our day exploring at the oldest house in Antwerp -
now a protected monument - when we realized it was right around the corner from our Airbnb. It was built around 1480 and has survived six wars and more than five hundred years. Next we dipped into a vintage store called Riot because I have a weakness for thrift shopping and was on the hunt for a warm winter coat. After that we walked to Grote Markt (the main square) where you find the town hall and a statue of local hero, Brabo. The story goes that long ago there was a giant named Antigoon who stopped all boatmen on the Scheldt River to demand a toll. Anyone who resisted had their hand cut off and thrown in the river. A young man named Brabo killed Antigoon and cut off his hand and threw it in the river. This is how Antwerp got its name. In Dutch it's called Antwerpen from 'hand werpen' which means hand throw. We strolled along to Het Steen which is a castle and also the oldest building in Antwerp. It's located right on the Scheldt River and we found a plaque commemorating Canadian soldiers who had fought to protect Antwerp and its harbour during World War II. Standing there thinking about the connection between Canada and Belgium and all the lives lost I was really moved. Antwerp is well known for its diamond industry. It has a large diamond district (known as the Diamond Quarter) where most of the world's diamonds pass through annually: billions and billions of bling. We ended the day with - what else? - Belgian fries. NOT French fries. The local specialty is stoofvlees which is a beef stew on top of fries with mayonnaise. It was delicious and I intend to eat as many fries as possible in Belgium! Hope you enjoy this tour around Antwerp!

Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a country in Western Europe bordered by France, the Netherlands, Germany and Luxembourg. A small and densely populated country, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi) and has a population of more than 11 million. Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking, mostly Flemish community, which constitutes about 59 percent of the population, and the French-speaking, mostly Walloon population, which comprises about 40 percent of all Belgians. Additionally, there is a small ~1 percent group of German speakers who live in the East Cantons.
Historically, Belgium lay in the area known as the Low Countries, a somewhat larger area than the current Benelux group of states that also included parts of Northern France and Western Germany. The region was called Belgica in Latin, after the Roman province of Gallia Belgica. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, the area of Belgium was a prosperous and cosmopolitan centre of commerce and culture. From the 16th century until the Belgian Revolution in 1830, when Belgium seceded from the Netherlands, the area of Belgium served as the battleground between many European powers, causing it to be dubbed the Battlefield of Europe, a reputation strengthened by both world wars.
Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. It is divided into three highly autonomous regions and three communities, that exist next to each other. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the mostly French-speaking southern part of the Wallonia region. The Brussels-Capital Region is an officially bilingual (French and Dutch) enclave within the Flemish Region. A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in its political history and complex system of governance, made up of six different governments.
Belgium participated in the Industrial Revolution and, during the course of the 20th century, possessed a number of colonies in Africa. The second half of the 20th century was marked by rising tensions between the Dutch-speaking and the French-speaking citizens fueled by differences in language and culture and the unequal economic development of Flanders and Wallonia. This continuing antagonism has led to several far-reaching reforms, resulting in a transition from a unitary to a federal arrangement during the period from 1970 to 1993. Despite the reforms, tensions between the groups have remained, if not increased; there is significant separatism particularly among the Flemish; controversial language laws exist such as the municipalities with language facilities; and the formation of a coalition government took 18 months following the June 2010 federal election, a world record. Unemployment in Wallonia is more than double that of Flanders, which boomed after the war.
Belgium is one of the six founding countries of the European Union and hosts the official seats of the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, and the European Council, as well as a seat of the European Parliament in the country's capital, Brussels. Belgium is also a founding member of the Eurozone, NATO, OECD, and WTO, and a part of the trilateral Benelux Union and the Schengen Area. Brussels hosts several of the EU's official seats as well as the headquarters of many major international organizations such as NATO.
Belgium is a developed country, with an advanced high-income economy. The country achieves very high standards of living, life quality, healthcare, education, and is categorized as very high in the Human Development Index. It also ranks as one of the safest or most peaceful countries in the world.

Liege Belgium, Liège-Guillemins railway station is the main station of the city of Liège, The third largest city in Belgium. It is one of the most important hubs in the country and is one of the 3 Belgian stations on the high-speed rail network. The station is used by 15,000 people every day which makes it the eleventh busiest station in Belgium. It has 9 tracks and 5 platforms (three of 450 m and two of 350 m). All the tracks around the station have been modernised to allow high speed arrival and departure.

The Netherlands (Dutch: Nederland) is a country located mainly in Northwestern Europe. Together with three island territories in the Caribbean (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba), it forms a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The European portion of the Netherlands consists of twelve provinces and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the northwest, with maritime borders in the North Sea with Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. The five largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven. Amsterdam is the country's capital, while The Hague holds the seat of the States General, Cabinet and Supreme Court. The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and the largest outside Asia.
'Netherlands' literally means 'lower countries', referring to its low and flat topography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) above sea level and nearly 17% being below sea level. Most of the areas below sea level, known as polders, are the result of land reclamation beginning in the 16th century. With a population of 17.30 million living within a total area of roughly 41,500 square kilometres (16,000 sq mi)—of which the land area is 33,700 square kilometres (13,000 sq mi)—the Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Nevertheless, it is the world's second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products after the United States, owing to its fertile soil, mild climate, and intensive agriculture.
The Netherlands was the third country in the world to have representative government and has been a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a unitary structure since 1848. Historically, the country has a tradition of pillarisation and a long record of social tolerance, having legalised abortion, prostitution and euthanasia, while maintaining a progressive drug policy. The Netherlands abolished the death penalty in 1870, allowed women's suffrage in 1917 and became the world's first country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2001. It is a founding member of the EU, Eurozone, G10, NATO, OECD and WTO, as well as a part of the Schengen Area and the trilateral Benelux Union. It hosts several intergovernmental organisations and international courts, many of which are centered in The Hague, which is consequently dubbed 'the world's legal capital.' Its mixed-market advanced economy had the thirteenth-highest per capita income globally. One of the world's most prosperous countries, the Netherlands ranks among the highest in international indexes of press freedom, economic freedom, human development, quality of life, as well as happiness. Its strong performance is owed in large part to a generous welfare state that provides universal healthcare, public education and infrastructure, in addition to social benefits. It is also known for its polder model, the country's leading socioeconomic model based on consensus decision-making.
