Netherlands: The Oudenbosch Basilica of the Saints Agatha and Barbara
The Oudenbosch Basilica is a Roman Catholic basilica in the small Dutch town of Oudenbosch (about 13.000 inhabitants) in the province of Noord-Brabant. It was realised under the initiative of father Willem Hellemons, who was parish priest between 1842 and 1884.
The church was built to replace the Gothic church of Oudenbosch. It is a smaller copy of the St. Peter's Basilica and St. John Lateran in Rome. It was designed by the architects Dr. P.H.J. Cuypers and G.J. van Swaay. Cuypers went to Rome in order to study in particular the St. Peter. He took over the dome of St. Peter, but the later established ship and facade are that of the St. John Lateran.
The construction began in 1865 but was not fully completed until 1982.
The basilica is unique in the region in that it is quite large with a classical Italian appearance that is atypical for most of northern Europe, let alone in a small town in North Brabant.
It is 81 meter long, 55 meter wide and the highest point of the dome is 63 meter. There is one large dome (20 meter diameter and 51 meter high) and several smaller domes.
The content of the church is 16 times smaller than St. Peter's in Rome.
The interior is richly decorated with ceiling paintings and sculptures. Along the walls hang paintings in the aisles that show the crusade of Jesus.
The organ was built in 1772 by Ludwig König for the Agatha Church, which was at that time in Protestant hands. In 1799, the church and the organ were available again for the Catholics.
In 1912 the church received the rank of Minor Basilica
