Ashburnham estate with private waterfall

Ashburnham estate in Matale area in Sri Lanka. Beautiful place in the heart of tea plantations with private waterfall. Wind conditions were good and was able fly Bebop drone for a while.

Diyangiri Ella/Devagiri Ella | දියන්ගිරි ඇල්ල/දේවගිරි ඇල්ල, Ihala Palampitiya (2014)

Despite its height, this Diyangiri Ella is not a frequently visited place due to its location. The waterfall lies on the Dolosbage – Bulathkohupitiya Road close to Upper Palampitiya. The locals may refer to this waterfall also as Diyawadana Ella or Diyawetena Ella.

The source of the fall is the Dedugala Ihala Palampitiya Mountain, in the Kegalle District.

* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. The increase usage of firewood leads to more deforestation even at a smaller scale.

* Don’t bring any plants back with you or break any plants/branches unnecessarily.

* Don’t walk off the designated footpath.

* Don’t use soap/detergent/shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they’d only lead to the contamination of those pure water sources and elimination of wildlife species.

* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Ahupini Waterfall

The 30m fall forms part of the Maha River that originates from both sides of the Raksawa mountains, and is itself 570m above sea level. The upper area of the fall winds through an area known as Uda Palatha, upstream of which is the Divisional Secretary's Uduwella GS area, in the backdrop of Apalawatte Pallegama village.

The fall forms a plunge pool strewn with rocks where people are not encouraged to bathe due to the risk of drowning. Also at the base of the pool are crevasses known as Pinikandawela and Tissakumarawella that are said to house treasure by villagers.


The fall is steeped in history. According to ancient books written about border demarcations, this fall acted as a demarcation between the area of Satara Korale and Paranu Kuru Korale. Also, according to folklore, the fall derives its name from a desperate suicide attempt, where a mounted monarch leapt from its upper reaches. Villagers say that the fall sometimes emits a fearsome roar that can last for 15 minutes, and that this signifies that it will claim a human sacrifice within a two-month period. The fall is 49km from Pussalawe and 44km from Kitugala. The upper reach is about 5km from Dolosbage in the Kandy District, and can be accessed by passing Aranayake. The foot of the fall can be reached by traveling through Mawanella in the Kegale District, across Aranayake. A four-wheel drive vehicle is the best option.

ගල්මඩුව ගෙඩිගේ විහාරය කිව්වම වැඩි දෙනෙක් නොදන්නවා උනාට මේක ගොඩක් දෙනෙක් දැකල තියනවා. මතකද රාණි සබන් ad එක. ඒක රුගත කරලා තියෙන්නේ මේ පන්සලේ. video එකේ අන්තිමේටම රාණි ad එකත් දැම්මා.

මේක හදලා තියෙන්නේ සෙන්කඩගල කිර්ති ශ්‍රී රාජසිංහ රජ්ජුරුවන්ගේ අගමෙහෙසියකගේ ඉල්ලීමක් අනුව බිසවුන්ට වන්දනා කිරීමට ඉදිකළා කියලයි සදහන් වෙන්නේ. මේක දකුණු ඉන්දීය පල්ලව සම්ප්‍රදායට අනුව තමා ඉදි වෙලා තියෙන්නේ ඒ නිසා දේවාලයකට කිට්ටු පෙනුමක් තියනවා. ( මේ වගේම පෙනුමක් තියනවා මාතලේ තියන නාලන්දා ගෙඩිගේ)

මේක සම්පුර්ණයෙ වැඩ අවසන් කිරීමට හැකි වෙලා නෑ. ඇතුලත බුදු පිළිමයක් වගේම නුවර සම්ප්‍රධායට අදාල බිතුසිතුවමුත් දැකගන්න තියනවා. දැන්නම් ඇතුලත යකඩ බාල්ක දාලා අමනෝ sheet වලින් ගහපු වහලයක් දාලා තියනවා.

ඇතුලේ අන්දකාර ගතිය නිසා මගේ phone එකට චායාරුප පැහැදිලිව ගන්න පුළුවන් උනේ නෑ.මෙතන නුවර අවට අය wedding photos ගන්න නිතරම එන තැනක්.

නුවර town එකට ඇවිත් GPS directions අනුව තමා ආවේ. මම ආවේ ඉරිදා දවසක උදේ 11ට විතර. ඒ වෙලාවේ ඇතුලේ දහම් පාසලක් තිබ්බා. ඒ නිසා ඇතුලට යන්න පැයක් විතර බලාන ඉන්න සිද්ද උනා. ඒ නිසා ඉරිදා දවසක යනවනම් 12න් පස්සේ යන්න.

Sri Pada Ella, Makara Thorana, Nallathanniya-Sri Pada Trail (2015)

This 45m fall is located in the Siripada Reserve. Take the road from Hatton to Nallathanniya and take the footpath situated near Sri Pada Makara Thorana for about 50m.

The fall lies in the middle of the tea plantation about 50m from the Makara Thorana. Some of them refer to this falls as Rajamale Ella but the Rajamale area is along the Rajamale Trail to the Sri Pada through Moray Estate on the other side of the mountain.

Wee Oya Falls aka We Oya Ella, Jayawindagama (Yatiyanthota-Seepoth Road) (2014)

There are two falls plunging into the same stream in the Dombepola Forest on the North of Wee Oya Estate. The falls can be seen in the thick jungle from the road from Yatiyanthota to Pahala (Lower) Palampitiya.

The Wee Oya (We Oya) Falls is about 20m high and this stream then joins the Wee Oya after the fall.
