Armed forces deployed to Belgian prisons as strike enters third week
Belgium has mobilised the military to assist in prisons where guards have been on strike for over two weeks.
Police and the Red Cross had been staffing the jails, after guards walked out in protest at what they say is dangerously-low staffing following budget cuts.
Stretched thin, three of the largest facilities have received some relief. Two of the prisons are located in Brussels and one in Liège.

10 : China–Mongolia border
The border between China and Mongolia is the line that limits the territory of People's
Republic of China and Mongolia. The west end is located only 55 km from the beginning of
the border Russia - Kazakhstan and is marked by the mountains of Altai . Stretches 4677
kilometers from east to west, between two
triple borders China - Mongolia - Russia .
9 : sweden and norway border
The border was changed several times because of war. Before 1645, Jämtland, Härjedalen,
Idre/Särna parish, and Bohuslän belonged to Norway.
8 : The Mexico–United States border is an international border separating Mexico and the
United States extending from the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Gulf of Mexico to the
east. The border traverses a variety of terrains, ranging from major urban areas to
uninhabitable deserts. As of 2010 approximately 350 million legal crossings occur annually,
and is the most frequently crossed border in the world.
7 : spain and portugal border
The Portugal–Spain border is the international boundary between Portugal and Spain. It is one of the oldest borders in the
world. The Portugal–Spain border is 1,214 km (754 miles) long and considered the
longest uninterrupted border within the European Union.
6 : slovakia austria hungary border
There are approximately 176 international tripoints. Nearly half are situated in rivers, lakes or seas. When on dry land,
the exact tripoints are usually indicated by markers or pillars, and occasionally by larger monuments.
5 : poland and ukraine border
A Poland-Ukraine border first formed, briefly, in the aftermath of the Polish-Ukrainian War in 1919. The Treaty of Warsaw of
1920 divided the disputed territories in Poland's favor along the Zbruch River. Next year, however, Ukraine lost its
independence to the Soviet Union, and its remaining territories were split between Poland and the Ukrainian SSR in the Peace
of Riga.
4 : denmark and sweden border
Sweden and Denmark–Norway became separate countries with the breakup of the Kalmar Union in 1523. Until 1658, the historic
provinces of Scania, Blekinge and Bohuslän (and until 1645 also Halland) belonged to Denmark, so that the Denmark–Sweden
border ran across what is now southern Sweden.
3 : haiti and the dominican republic border
Struggles began during colonial times and have developed into nearly constant conflict between the two governments. The
political division of the island of Hispaniola is due in part to the European struggle for control of the New World during
the 17th century, when France and Spain began fighting for control of the island. They resolved their dispute in 1697 by
splitting the island into two countries.
2 : usa and canada border
The Treaty of Paris of 1783 ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States. In the second
article of the Treaty the parties agreed on all of the boundaries of the United States, including but not limited to the
boundary with British North America to the north.
1 : Baarle-Nassau is closely linked, with complicated borders, to the Belgian exclaves of Baarle-Hertog. Baarle-Hertog
consists of 26 separate pieces of land. Apart from the main piece (called Zondereigen) located north of the Belgian town of
Merksplas, there are 22 Belgian exclaves in the Netherlands and three other pieces on the Dutch-Belgian border.

Accept the Change - Last Show (JH Zigzag)
Hailing from a small rural town in northern Belgium called Sint-Jozef Accept the Change were comprised of five lifelong friends. Formed in 2008 the melodic hardcore band released a demo (Changing Lanes) in 2009, a full-length album (Escapism is a Dying Art) in 2011 and an E.P. (Get Out There) in 2012, all of which remained wrongfully underappreciated.
Although dealing with very personal issues on Tom's part, their intense melancholic style of music managed to translate universal feelings of isolation, coming of age and depression and thus appealed to both youngsters and adolescents worldwide. Accept the Change toured the European mainland a first time with Ritual (DE) and Soul Control (US) and a second time with Manbearpig (UK) after they released Escapism is a Dying Art on Assault Records.
On 25 April, 2012 Accept the Change released following statement, announcing their breakup:
I guess this wasn't the announcement you were hoping for. But we have decided we can no longer exist as a band and to go on an indefinite hiatus. We will say goodbye on September 15, 2012 on this year's Ziggypop. All our other shows will go on as planned. And if you want us to play in your neighbourhood, this is your last chance to make that happen.
It's been 4 beautiful years and we're very thankful for the experiences we've shared and all the great friends we've made along the way. Special thanks goes to Assault Records for releasing our record, Jh Zigzag for always making us feel like home and to our closest friends who believed in us from day one.
This wasn't an easy choice to make. We've been (and still are) buddies since our childhood and most of us played in bands together since age 13. So it's more than likely new side projects will be born. Keep an eye out.
This is something we'll never forget.
Ziggypop, an annual festival organised by youth centre JH Zigzag in Merksplas, set the stage for their final show. The venue choice was self-evident, since the youth centre accommodated numerous shows for the band and its coordinator is a close friend. This video offers you a recapitulation of the show, which took place on 15 September, 2012. Special thanks go out to Maarten Van Hoof ( for the incredible additional footage.
Accept the change was:
- Ruben Vervoort, guitar
- Jasper Dufraing, guitar
- Tom Bosschaerts, vocals
- Jente Otten, bass
- Christophe Van Eyck, drums
You can find the lyrics of the song (Nameless Boys) below as well as an English translation of the speech given by frontman Tom Bosschaerts at the beginning of the set.
Enjoy.
I've prepared playlists, but forgot to bring them with me.
I've prepared a thank you list, but forgot to bring it with me.
So, I'd like to apologise in case I forget to mention someone. Let's go through the list of people we've encountered and helped us throughout our career or whatever: all of our friends, Niels and Youth Club Zigzag, Bert and the Midnight Souls, Niels Fatalist for managing our tour, everyone who has provided us with food, a place to sleep, booked a show for us, listened to our music, came up to us for a chat, got anything out of our music or was like: Hey, Accept the change..., you know...
My room's a mess. I'm coughing up cobwebs and the sheets haven't been refreshed since you've been here last month. There's bottled up waste stuffed in all four corners and I haven't washed myself for days.
Mother, I'm in a worse state than my pig pen back home. I'm overslept, underfed, a total wreck and the goddamn meds are taking too long. I am uninhabitable she says, but please don't lock me away. My head's a mess. I'm stuck in the basement, dug deep in a rat's nest while all my roommates have moved out. I am growing insane. I've grown so out of touch with myself I feel uncomfortable when someone knows my name.
You'll be okay.
I gave my wallet to the kneeling man down the street, because the only thing I really need is a breath of fresh air. Mother, I'm even worse than I've been before but tonight I promise I'm coming home. I'm overdosing on polluted fumes and still you give me hope. I've been outside, tongue-tied, too tired, tied in barbed wire for far too long.
I never thought that I'd tell you about this, but I am just another fucked up kid on a drug prescription list. Here's to all the kids with a smile on their face singing songs about suicidal days. Strike a chord if you are feeling bored and you'll do fine. Consider yourself lucky you have never died.
You wouldn't know what it's like to lose your hope, to lose your mind, to lose your soul, to lose it all. Every nameless boy, every hate-filled girl on the endless list. They wouldn't know what it's like.
You have never died.
