Brisighella and the Donkeys Alley | Italia Slow Tour

Brisighella is a typical Italian borgo near Ravenna. This place has deep roots in farming, so that its main highlight is a unique walkway called Via degli asini (i.e. The Donkeys' Alley). Some kind of street, perched high above the ground level, where merchants used to ride donkey to carry their goods. Built by the end of 300 d.C., at first it was a defensive alley to check the enemies' movements. Then it become a protected and covered street for trades. Strolling along the way, you can still notice the ancient stables for the donkeys. But nowadays it is a very nice trekking trails to get a great point of view on the whole borgo.

This fairy tale medieval castle, once property of the notorious Borgia family, is exceptionally well situated on the borders of Tuscany and Umbria on the shore of the lake Trasimeno and offers 7 bedrooms and 6 baths.
Today, after many centuries of history, it appears in its present form, imposing stone facade with one tall tower, Renaissance arches, cross vaulted ceilings, large stone fireplaces, lovely flooring of oak parquet or terracotta. In the last two years the owner renovated some areas inside the castle such as bathrooms and two bedrooms.
The castle interiors, decorated with splendid frescos, are very tastefully furnished with elegant and valuable pieces of furniture. This exclusive atmosphere represents a unique experience. In the serene countryside, where the stillness is punctuated only by the sounds of wild birds and the cicadas, it is hard to imagine that Hannibal celebrated his great victory over Rome on the shores below.

TREKKING - ASCIANO - Valle delle Fonti - Mirteto - Al Castagno - di Sergio Colombini

La Valle delle Fonti si trova sul versante sud-ovest del Monte Pisano, è una delle formazioni geologiche più antiche della Toscana, questa divide la piana pisana da quella lucchese, si innalza in mezzo a territori oggi bonificati, ma in passato paludosi, fino a raggiungere una quota di 917 mt. slm con il Monte Serra.
Un' importante risorsa che ha dato il nome alla Valle e che l'ha resa oggetto di sistemazioni e trasformazioni è l'acqua che sgorga da sorgenti purissime. Fu per primo il Gran Duca Cosimo I a voler costruire un acquedotto a condotta forzata per incanalare le acque della Valle delle Fonti. Le prime canalizzazioni delle sorgenti più importanti risalgono alla seconda metà del cinquecento.
La costruzione dell'Acquedotto mediceo, voluta dal figlio di Cosimo I, Ferdinando, venne realizzato negli ultimi anni del XVI secolo e l'acqua finalmente raggiunse Pisa.
L'antico borgo monastico di Mirteto posto alle pendici del monte Conserva, attestato fin dal 1150, comprendeva la chiesa di Santa Maria di Mirteto, dipendente dal monastero di San Michele in Verruca e successivamente dalla pieve di Ascino. Anche se tutto il complesso è abbandonato mantiene ancora l'assetto medioevale, oltre alla chiesa della metà dell' XI restano i ruderi delle abitazioni, dei granai e del frantoio. Nel 1712 la chiesa compare come oratorio privato della famiglia Ricci, ora estinta.
