Come join us in part one of our adventure in Kyoto where we visit the Nishiki Market, Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and the Yasaka Shrine in the Gion District.
First, we visit the Nishiki Market, which is known as Kyoto's Kitchen. Make sure to come here with a very large appetite! There are five blocks with more than 100 shops and restaurants. It's a very lively, busy market. There's so much food to choose from, and a lot of it is affordable. Make sure to check the hours before you go because we almost missed it!
On our second day in Kyoto, we visit go to the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. This shrine is famous for the hundreds of red gates. It is so beautiful. Admission is free! This is one of my favorite shrines we visited in Kyoto. It is so beautiful. It was extremely busy when we were there, and it was only about ten in the morning. It opens at six in the morning, so my advice is to go as early as possible.
Next, we head to the Gion District, which is the most famous Geisha area. There are teahouses, restaurants, shrines and much more. We went here mainly to visit some shrines.
First, we visit the Yasaka Shrine. You will see a lot of people dressed in Kimonos here. It's really cool because you can rent a kimono to wear for the day. This makes for amazing pictures at the shrines. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to rent one. Check online for the many places you can rent one for the day.

FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE: Ten Thousand Torii Gates in Kyoto, Japan
Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the most popular tourist attraction in Kyoto. The ancient site enshrines Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice, who is known as a deity of business prosperity, household and personal safety, and improvement in the performing arts. Our advice is to get up early and visit on a weekday, if possible, to beat the crowds.
The sheer number of torii gates here is mind boggling. Torii gates had become widely used by the start of the Edo period in the 1600s. Today, there are around 10,000 torii gates of all sizes along the mountain paths of Fushimi Inari. Each gate has been paid for by a company or organization to give thanks for their prosperity and for good fortune in the future.
Vermilion red is considered an amulet against evil forces, and is used in many ancient palaces, shrines, and temples in Japan. At Fushimi Inari, the color expresses the bountiful harvests that Inari provides. Foxes are said to be the messengers of Inari. These foxes cannot be seen with human eyes and for that reason are often referred to as “white foxes.”

For well over a thousand years, Kyoto was home to the Imperial Family, and therefore Japan's capital city until 1868 when Edo became Tokyo after the Emperor moved.
The traditional Kyoto is in stark contrast to it's neon counterpart, Tokyo. Arts and culture have had a huge influence on the city, which has helped shaped the beautiful and peaceful city that stands today.
Kyoto is is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, made up of temples, shrines and gardens... It's honestly one of the best places I've ever visited.
Kyoto Festival: Young Japanese Girls Dancing at Zuishin-in Temple (Hanezu Odori)
Serving as a celebration of the coming spring season and in honor of the famous poet and Japanese beauty Ono no Komachi, Zuishin-in Temple's Hanezu Odori is held each year on the last Sunday of March. Based on an old folk song and dance tradition in the Ono area of Kyoto, Japan, the Hanezu Odori tells the story of Ono no Komachi and her ill-fated would-be lover Fukukasa no Shosho. Young girls perform this charming dance accompanied by koto music and a song that tells the sad story of The Tale of One Hundred Nights.
Let a monk from Zuishin-in guide you step by step through this local festival, show you the lovely plum blossom gardens, and explain the various dances and sights available at the Hanezu Odori!

The Fushimi-Inari-Taisha shrine in Kyoto, Japan is most famous for its long rows of vermilion Torii gates, nearly 5000 gates in all.
Various temple structures are in front including the famous Romon Gate, but the main attraction is that vast network of Torii gates which have made Inari one of the most popular destinations in town.
Whenever you see the torii gate you know that this is not a Buddhist temple but instead it's a Shinto shrine.
And this is the main shrine of this particular Shinto sect that's dedicated to the gods of rice and sake. Throughout Japan there are 40,000 other Inari shrines but this is the principle one.
The Inari Shrine is a wonderful Shinto experience. You walk through all of these different gateways along a path that winds through the forest.
This is the largest collection of Torii gates anywhere in the world.
You could spend one or two hours walking this pathway that extends for almost 3 miles altogether.
The gates are surrounded by natural forest and by various small cultivated gardens with some ponds here and there.
You can walk all the way up the hillside to the top of Mount Inari, which is about 240 meters high and you won't get lost, just follow the path, follow the tunnels of torii gates.
The biggest problem with the Inari shrine is that it's just too popular -- it's being loved to death.
