Omalo is a principal village in the historical region of Tusheti, Georgia. Administratively, it is part of the Akhmeta District in Kakheti. It lies between the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the Pirikita Range of Tusheti. Due to Omalo's high mountain location on the northern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the absence of well-maintained roads, it is largely isolated from the rest of Georgia for most of the year. The only access road is through the Abano pass at 2,850 metres The fortress of Keselo is a landmark in Zemo Omalo, this place served as a refuge for locals in wartime.

The Tusheti National Park in East Georgia is one of the eight new Protected Areas approved by Parliament of Georgia on 22 April 2003. Global Environment Facility and the World Bank were part of this approval process under the Georgia – Protected Areas Development Project. Plants conserved in the park are pine groves and birch groves . The Tusheti Protected Areas includes Tusheti National Park, Tusheti Protected Landscape and Tusheti Strict Nature Reserve with total protected area about 113,660.2 ha.The key faunal species in the park are Anatolian leopard , bear, chamois, falcon, Golden Eagle, lammergeyer, lynx, mountain goat, wild goat, and wolf. Iqalto is a village about 10 km west of the town Telavi in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia. It is mostly known for its monastery complex and the Ikalto Academy. The Ikalto monastery was founded by Saint Zenon, one of the 13 Syrian Fathers, in the late 6th century. It was known as one of the most significant cultural-scholastic centres of Georgia. An academy was founded at the monastery during king David the Builder by Arsen Ikaltoeli in the early 12th century. The Academy of Ikalto trained its students in theology, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, geography, geometry chanting but also more practical skills such as pottery making, metal work, viticulture and wine making and pharmacology. Tusheti NP, Georgia: Omalo Road across Abano Pass (2850m)

Summary of the 70 km from Omalo (Tusheti NP) to Pshaveli (Kakheti) across the 2850m high Abano Pass, one of the highest driveable passes in Europe.

This pass is on the north/south watershed of the Caucasus Mouantains, which is in most definitions the border between Europe and Asia.

It took us just over three hours to drive this stretch, an indication of the general condition of the road. It was also featured in an episode of the BBC's World's Most Dangerous Roads series. ( )

In this episode we're in Georgia and we make our way towards the countries most remote region, Tusheti. To get there we have to hitchhike on one of the world's MOST DANGEROUS roads which is only open between late May and October and where many people die every year. As you've probably figured out, we survived and boy was it an amazing journey!!! The road is unreal and the views are just SPECTACULAR!! OUR WOLD IS AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!

In this episode we leave the cave town of Uplistsikhe and hitchhike back to Gori where we almost get ripped off in a restaurant. We decide to travel towards the famous Katskhi pillar, a tall rock with a little church on top. We are completely out of our hitchhiking balance and are struggeling to enjoy ourselves. We're tired and not sure what are last step should be. Although we struggle to stay positive we (as usual) meet amazing people who go out of their way to help us on the road.
