Another only once a year activity in Belgium is a visit to the Royal greenhouses, out by the Royal Palace in Laeken (in Brussels). The greenhouses were built in the 19th century and designed by the architect Alphonse Balat (a teacher of Victor Horta). The greenhouses were built for King Leopold II. They are currently the private property of the current royal family, but for about 3 weeks every spring they are open to the public. The buildings themselves are part of the attraction, with a large number of neoclassical domes and galleries. The plants are all tropical and include a huge number of ferns, geraniums, fuschias, azaleas, and citrus trees, among others. The tour includes both outdoor and indoor areas and is a very pleasant way to spend an hour or 2. We were blessed with fantastic weather once again, and the blooms on the plants, especially the azaleas, were absolutely out of this world. The park was pretty busy on this gorgeous Saturday afternoon of a long weekend, but I'm sure the crowds aren't as bad during the week. Even with the large crowds it was still lovely and enjoyable. Admission to the greenhousee is only 2 euro. They are also open in the evenings on Friday and Saturday. After our greenhouse visit, we went to the Chocolatier Manon for mom to stock up on the best chocolate in the world. That night we had a great farewell dinner at a Thai restaurant in Overijse, and she left to go back to the states on Sunday morning. That's a lot of flowers to fit in just a few days...we could have done tons more if we'd only had more time and more energy! If there's one thing Belgium and Holland have no shortage of in the spring, it's FLOWERS.

Flanders Fields

I got to explore the trenches near the river Yser(IJzer) and watch a memorial ceremony at the Menin Gate(Menenpoort) in Ypres(Ieper)! I got to go two times, first with my family, and second with my AFS chapter. We also made statues of soldiers to help with a current project.
