►Read more details about Sate Padang Ajo Ramon here:
Sate, also spelled satay, is one of the most popular forms of Indonesian street food, and there are many different version of sate available. One of the types of sate, originally from Padang in Sumatra, is called Sate Padang, and it’s one of the versions that seems to have a very strong following of people that love it.
For my first taste of Sate Padang in Jakarta, I went to a place called Sate Padang Ajo Ramon, located in south Jakarta in a lovely shade covered neighborhood. I think it actually sets up in the evening in front of a market, but it’s a nice friendly and quiet place for a food stall. When you walk up, you can already smell the aroma of the grilling skewers of meat.
The skewers of meat were quite small, but they were just coated in a thick layers of fragrant spices before being grilled. You could get a variety of different parts of the beef, including regular meat, intestines, or tongue, and tongue is one of the most popular cuts for Sate Padang. I ordered half tongue and half meat. After the sate were finished grilling, they were put on a plate along with ketupat (rice cakes) and then the entire plate was covered in a thick brown gravy sauce. The actual skewers of the grilled meat, plus the brown gravy is what makes Sate Padang so unique.
I have to admit, it’s not one of the prettiest Indonesian dishes, but Sate Padang absolutely makes up for its looks with flavor. With every bite I took, the spices literally exploded in my mouth.
From eating my first plate of Sate Padang in Jakarta, I’ve become a little bit obsessed. The only reason I didn’t have another plate immediately is because I came here right after eating a big seafood meal, so I was pretty stuffed.

Padang is the capital of West Sumatra and is the gateway to the highlands Minang. With the largest port on the West Coast of Sumatra, this city is an attractive trading town ship goods such as rubber, cinnamon, coffee, cement, tea, and coal. If you take a walk in the old colonial beach you will see an old barn filled with cinammon fragrances and spices waiting to be shipped to Jakarta and Singapore.

30 INDONESIAN TRADITIONAL CULINARY ICONS
FOREWORD

REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
Indonesia, Culinary Heaven
Indonesia culinary is bestowed with a very unique profile and covers a wide spectrum. There is no other country in the world with such culinary resplendence. From Sabang to Merauke, from Talaud to Rote Island, Indonesian culinary is innumerable. Judging from its vast variety, it would be unfitting to claim any dish as purely Indonesian. True Indonesian culinary is marked by cuisines of Aceh, Melayu, Palembang, Java and dozens of other originating cuisines. Just as Indonesia recognizes a wide variey of local dialects, so too the originating cuisines lend a hand to its many derivatives. For instance, Pariaman cuisine is known to have different characters from Kotogadang cuisine, and nothing in commong with Kapau cuisine -- even though they all belong to the genre of Minang cuisine.
The visionary Empu Tantular, a 14th century poet sage of Majapahit Empire, wrote the sacred phrase which then became Indonesian national motto: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. Unity in Diversity!
Whereas Bhinneka Tunggal Ika originated from the principle tenet of gotong royong (working together towards a common goal), Indonesian culinary stems from the traditional of communal eating. One dish for all. In the past, the Dutch discovered this principle and created the rijsttafel tradition. We now bring you closer to the onset of the tradition: Tumpeng Nusantara. With cone-shaped rice in the middle, Rendang Padang sits in state with Ayam Goreng Lengkuas from Bandung, Urap Sayuran from Yogyakarta and Sate Lilit from Bali. Tumpeng Nusantara is proof that elements Indonesian culinary can meet together beautifully in a state of harmony.
The 30 INDONESIAN TRADITIONAL CULINARY ICONS featured in this book is an important first step toward a thorough compilation of the richness and variety of Indonesian culinary. It is a duty we owe Motherland.
Bon appetit, my brothers and sisters! Enjoy the sumptuous taste of Indonesian culinary.

MASJID RAYA PADANG
MASJID RAYA PADANG
Terinspirasi dari tiga simbol: sumber mata air (the springs: unsur alam), bulan sabit, dan Rumah Gadang. Memperlihatkan integrasi sejarah Islam, konteks Padang dan tradisinya. Adat basandi Syara’, Syara’ Basandi Kitabullah.
#indonesianature #indonesianature
