Álava or Araba , officially Araba/Álava, is a province of Spain and a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Álava, former medieval Catholic bishopric and now Latin titular see. Its capital city, Vitoria-Gasteiz, is also the seat of the political main institutions of the autonomous community. It borders the Basque provinces of Biscay and Gipuzkoa to the north, the community of La Rioja to the south, the province of Burgos to the west and the community of Navarre to the east.     The Museum of Human Evolution is a museum on the subject of human evolution situated on the south bank of the river Arlanzón, in the Spanish city of Burgos. It is located roughly 16 kilometres west of the Sierra de Atapuerca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and location of some of the most important human fossil finds in the world. The museum was opened on July 13, 2010, and had received 148,045 visitors as of December 31, 2010, making it the most visited museum in Castile and León. It forms the centerpiece of the so-called Complejo de la Evolución Humana comprising a convention centre, the CENIEH research institution and the museum itself .

    The Museum of Fournier de Naipes is a playing card museum located in Vitoria, Spain. It originated as a private collection in 1916 by Félix Alfaro Fournier, the grandson of the founder of Naipes Heraclio Fournier. It was bought by the government of Álava and was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1984. In 1994, it moved to its current location in the Bendaña palace which it shares with the Álava Museum of Archaeology.

    The National Museum and Research Center of Altamira is a center dedicated to the conservation of, research into and the sharing of information about the cave of Altamira in Santillana del Mar , named a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The museum offers prehistoric technology workshops to visitors, as well as a permanent exhibition called Times of Altamira, which contains objects from Altamira as well as those from other palaeolithic caves of Cantabria such as El Morín, El Juyo and El Rascaño. The New Altamira Cave, or Neocave, is also part of this exhibition: an artificial replica of the original caves, built in order to preserve the originals from damage arising from a massive influx of visitors.
