What to see in Covarrubias, Spain
Driving to Covarrubias, Spain from Madrid on the A1. It was a great way to see the country side and to visit the 14th century village and experience my ancestry! What a great experience and what wonderful people live in this village.
Covarrubias owes its name to the reddish caves that abound in its outskirts. The city centre, which has been declared Property of Cultural Interest, is a wonderful example of typical Castilian urban layout, with arcaded streets, and houses that have wooden structures.
The entrance to the old town is under the arch of the Castile Archive, where Philip II's coat of arms can be seen on the façade. Before walking under the arch, look at the 16th-century Gothic cross in front of the archive. A stroll through the old town will also allow you to discover the features of the typical Castilian architecture: ground floor made of stone, arcade, intricate wooden framework and upper continuous balcony. The house of Doña Sancha is one of the best examples.
Some of the monuments that stand out are the Church of Santo Tomás, with its altarpieces and Renaissance pulpit; and the Gothic Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián. Under the altar lie the remains of three abbess-princesses, and in the presbytery, those of Count Fernán González and his wife Sancha, the latter buried in a 4th-century Roman-Spanish sarcophagus. The cloister dates from the 16th century, and the museum, which the visitor should not miss, keeps one of the most beautiful Gothic-Flemish images: a 16th-century triptych of the Adoration of the Magi. Nearby you can find the remains of the old walls, as well as the Doña Urraca Tower, a 10th-century Mozarabic construction.

With High Speed Train AVE from Girona to Madrid ATOCHA - Spain 4K Travel Channel
The distance from Girona via Barcelona to Madrid is about 700 km.
Girona and Barcelona are part of the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia, including the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Because of the autonomous status of Catalonia is also designated as historical nationality.
The railway line runs through Zaragoza, the capital of the autonomous community of Aragon, comprising the provinces of Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza. Thereafter, the train crosses the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha to Madrid.
La Mancha became known by Don Quixote. Castilla-La Mancha, in turn, consists of the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo.
Our journey leads over the Costa Brava by the foreland of the Pyrenees to Barcelona. We cross the Ebro at Zaragoza and our way leads through the Systema central, the main systems of mountain ranges in the Iberian Peninsula to Madrid. In April, you still can see the snow-covered tops of this mountain range from Madrid.
We leave Girona at 7:11 and arrive in Madrid around 11:15. After 700 km we are completely relaxed and had the chance to enjoy the landscape during our journey. Although the train had to cope with over 600 meters of altitude. Madrid is Europe's highest capital and lies 667 m above sea level.
The train station in Girona is already impressive, as it was built deep below the surface, just like the train station in Barcelona. However, the station in Madrid reminds much more an airport. One reaches the exit or the metro station over long conveyors and escalators. In Spain, baggage-checks with scanners are carried out at every station of the high-speed trains of Renfe Ave. A seat seat reservation is also required. It is checked at the departure station.
We traveled with a Renfe Spain Pass , a cost-effective way to travel with AVE Long Distance and Medium Distance trains (excluding couchettes) for non-residents in Spain. You can choose Passes of 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 journeys in Business/Club or Tourist Class. The pass is active for 6 months as from the date of issue and is valid for 1 month as from the date on which it is first validated for a journey. For long distances we can highly recommend to use a Renfe Spain Pass.

Wir fahren um 7:11 in Girona ab und sind um 11:15 in Madrid. Nach 700 km kommen wir völlig entspannt an und haben in der Zwischenzeit die Landschaft genossen. Und das obwohl der Zug auch noch über 600 Höhenmeter bewältigen musste. Madrid ist Europas höchstgelegene Hauptstadt und liegt auf 667 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Bahnhof in Girona ist schon beeindrucken, da er tief unter die Erde gelegt wurde, ebenso wie der Bahnhof in Barcelona. Der Bahnhof in Madrid erinnert aber viel mehr einen Flughafen. Über lange Rollbänder und Rolltreppen erreicht man den Ausgang oder die Metro Station. An Spaniens Bahnhöfen für die Hochgeschwindigkeitszüge Renfe AVE werden überall Gepäckkontrollen mit Scannern durchgeführt. Es ist auch eine Sitzplatzreservierung erforderlich, die am Abfahrtsbahnhof überprüft wird.
Wir reisten mit einem Renfe Spanien Pass, eine günstige Möglichkeit für Ausländer in Spanien mit AVE Fern- und Mittelstreckenzüge (ohne Liegewagen) zu reisen. Sie können Pässe von 4, 6, 8, 10 oder 12 Fahrten in Business / Verein oder Touristenklasse zu wählen. Der Pass ist für 6 Monate ab dem Tag der Ausstellung aktiv und gültig für 1 Monat ab dem Tag der ersten Nutzung. Für lange Strecke ist der Renfe Spain Pass auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen
