PTUJ, SLOVENIA - travel shorts
It is much easier to describe Ptuj's location between Slovenske gorice and Haloze and between Dravsko polje and Ptujsko polje than to write a short history of the city. Its history is rich and the city has numerous monuments to prove it. Its history reaches back to the Stone Age, but the city experienced its greatest flowering in the Roman period. The name originates in the times of Emperor Trajan, who granted the settlement city status and named it Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio. In 69 A.D., Emperor Vespasian was elected in Ptuj, and the first written mention of the city of Ptuj is from the same year. Roman Poetovio developed into an important military, commercial, customs, and administrative center. Forty thousand people lived in the Ptuj area in this period, a number never since reached. It was later burned by the Huns and occupied by the Avars and the Slavs. In the period of the Slav prince Pribina, it was incorporated into the Frankish state. Later, it became the property of the Salzburg archdiocese and experienced the Hungarian attacks. The city recovered and when city rights were granted, it was able to build a wall around the city. The first city statutes from 1376 provided the legal regulation of the city and contributed to its economic power. Sadly, this declined under the pressure of Turkish attacks and major fires, floods, and epidemics. Today, this important economic center of the lower Podravje region is a city of fairs, a city of excursions into unspoiled nature, a city with a rich culinary offer, and a city of wine cellars and thermal springs.

Maribor, Slovenia - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Maribor
Top best places to visit in Maribor, Slovenia
Maribor is the second most important center and the second largest city of Slovenia.
Maribor, set amid the wine-region hills of the Pohorje Mountain, is the real Pride of Styria, a traditional region in northeastern Slovenia.
The city’s old town is situated on the left bank of the river Drava. On the Main Square is the Town Hall and... the Plague Memorial, which commemorates the “black death” that devastated the city in 1680.
The Castle Square, the core of city center, is very popular among locals, with the St Florian Statue in the middle and, built in the 15th century, the Maribor Castle.
Next to this, one of the most remarkable architectonic buildings in the city, are the National Liberation Monument and... the ‘Reddish’' Franciscan Church.
The most important sacred temple in the city, the Maribor Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church, stands on the Slomskov Square, one of the most charming places in the city. The small park is surrounded also by the Post of Slovenia, the University of Maribor and the National Theater.
Of the remnants of city walls surrounding the old town, the most prominent are:
The Judgment Tower, a fortified medieval structure.
Built to secure city walls from the direction of the river, the Water Tower.
One of the oldest preserved synagogues in Europe, and one of only two left in Slovenia, the Maribor Synagogue.
And the Old Vine House, a museum dedicated to this 450 year old tree which still gives grapes.
But the real charm of the city is hidden between the lovely streets and squares in the old town.
Despite the relative small size, Maribor has a surprisingly big green space, the Mestni Park.
And a big football arena, the Ljudski Vrt Stadium, the home ground of Maribor Football Club.
The Piramida Hill is a good place to see the city from high up, from the spot the Maribor Castle used to stand, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the whole city.

Ptuj the oldest city of Slovenia
I present to you the beautiful old town of Ptuj, which lies in the center of Ptuj. In the center of Ptuj on the hill stands the
Ptuj castle, where we have beautiful view of the entire city of Ptuj. The paintings, furniture and other attractions of that time
are displayed in the castle museum and also a carnival masks museum. Under the castle, we can admire old buildings, the church of St. Juri, Orpheus monument, Town Tower, Town Hall and other attractions. The old town of Ptuj offers a variety of good food. Personally, I was at the Chinese Garden restaurant, where they have very good food and staff is very friendly. Visit Ptuj is suitable
for individuals or families who have love history and adore old places.
Ptuj is a town in northeastern Slovenia. Is the oldest recorded city in Slovenia, has been inhabited since the late Stone Age
and developed from a Roman military fort. Ptuj was located at a strategically important crossing of the Drava River,
along a prehistoric trade route between the Baltic Sea and the Adriatic. Traditionally the area was part of the Styria region
and became part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire.

Novo Mesto (Neustadtl, Neustädtel or Rudolfswerth) is a city in the southeast of Slovenia, not far from the Croatian border and 60 kilometers southeast of the capital Ljubljana.

Slovenia - Skofja Loka and Kranj
Half a day stop in two Slovenian towns on the way to the airport. Well worth the visit.
You can catch a bus to Škofja Loka from Ljubljana. The oldest medieval town in Slovenia. From the bus stop take a walk over the 14th century Capuchin Bridge to the centre. Let yourself guided by the narrow streets. The 13th century Parish Church of St James is not to be missed as well.
From the same drop off point, there is another bus that goes to Kranj, the 4th biggest city of the country. Time only allowed me to go in the old town, but one can easily spend a full day here. Plenty of parks to explore, rich architecture and many restaurants to get a taste of Slovenian cuisine.
There is public transport connecting all these town, but even in summer they're quite rare so make sure to check the time table in advance. If you are in a rush a taxi might be a better option as the airport is quite close.
I hope this short video gave you a taste of Slovenia. Thanks for watching.
