Quito Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Quito, the capital of Ecuador, sits high in the Andes and straddles the equator, making it the closest national capital to the sun.
San Francisco de Quito, as this harmonious city is officially called, is all about balance. Its World Heritage protected Old Town is contrasted by its progressive New Town.
The New Town, or La Mariscal, is centered on the bustling Plaza del Quinde and has markets, trendy cafés and nightlife.
The Plaza de la Independencia is the Civic heart of Old Town, is overlooked by the Municipal Palace, Archbishop’s Palace and Presidential Palace.
Quito has a wealth of ornate churches, including the Santo Domingo Church, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Basilica de la Merced, de San Francisco Church, the Church of the Society of Jesus and the Basilica of the National Vow.
There are two hills that are worth exploring: Panecillo Hill is famous for its winged statue known as the “Virgin of Quito.” Itchimbia Park has a contemporary
Cultural Center and panoramic city views.
The nearby Pichincha Volcano was once the setting of a historic battle that resulted in Quito’s liberation from Spain. But it’s the Cotopaxi Volcano, that is the Quito’s most famous landmark. While in the area, you can’t miss the Mitad del Mundo Monument and the Intiñan Solar Museum where you walk the line of the equator and be in two hemispheres at the same time.

Jagriti - The Awakening Centre of Dada Chidrupananda
Glimpses of Venezuela: Jagriti - The Awakening Centre of Dada Chidrupananda at Apartaderos (situated at 3505 metres above Sea Level on the Andes Mountain, it is the highest town of Venezuela), State of Merida, 8-12 August 2013.
Dada Acharya Chidrupananda Avadhuta was born as Chinmoy Ghose on 22 January 1961 at the foothills of the Himalayas in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India. His parents, Mr. Chittaranjan Ghose and Mrs. Pusparani Ghose, used to call him Babua with affection. Although he grew up like other kids, he never forgot to meditate twice a day - before Sunrise and before Sunset. His father, mother and grandmother used to narrate to him stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, Lord Shiva, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. He was initiated into Meditation in 1967, at the age of 6 by a disciple of Great Master and Mystic Shrii Shrii Anandamurti (Shri Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar) (1921-1990), the Founder of Ananda Marg. Soon after, in 1968, he got the opportunity to meet Shrii Shrii Anandamurti who blessed him.
He discovered in school that he had less interest in pure sciences. He, therefore, studied English Literature, History and Philosophy for his Graduation [B.A. (Hons.)] which he passed in 1981 from Cooch Behar district. He opened two Kindergarten Schools for the kids in Alipurduar.
In 1982 he came to the Dharma Maha Sammelan (Great Spiritual Congregation) at Kolkata to see Shrii Shrii Anandamurti Ji who said to him, I'm waiting for you. Dada did not return home after this and received Tantra Yoga training at Benares from where his monastic life started. He was called Chaitanya and became an Acharya after training and was called Acharya Chandan Kumar Brahmachary. After few years, he was declared to be an Avadhuta and Gurudeva gave him the name of Acharya Chidrupananda Avadhuta. He received the teachings of Love, the Vedas, Upanishads, Tantra, Yoga, Bio-Psychology and Natural Remedies directly from Shrii Shrii Anandamurti Ji.
He worked as a Global Education In-charge of Ananda Marga Board of Education (Gurukula), supervising, administrating and opening a large number of schools and orphanages all over the world until 1991.
The physical disappearance of his beloved Gurudeva in October 1990 created an enormous vacuum in his heart. He left for Himalayas, visited holy places, lived in the caves and meditated on Gurudeva during which Gurudeva's earlier signal that he should go to Venezuela in search of Love in his heart was reconfirmed. He left India in 1992, lived in Brazil for 2 years, reached Caracas, Venezuela in August 1994 and started deepening of his knowledge through experiences of mundane and spiritual lives.
In April 1997, he decided to be free from the organizational bondage and left Ananda Marg to fly with his own wings. In May 1997, he shifted to San Antonio de Los Altos to start his new life as a monk. He registered a Civil Association called Mission Universal de Amor- Ananda Marga (Universal Mission of Love- Ananda Marga), based on the teachings of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti ji and started giving Yoga and Meditation classes and intensified his practice of Yogic and Natural remedies. By the grace of God, his centre started to grow.
From 1998, he started organizing spiritual retreats, workshops on Tantra, Yoga, training for Yoga Instructors and courses on Self-development, Teamwork and Management for universities such as UCV (2000-2004) and UBV (2004-2006). He gives advice on Bio- Psychology to interested people almost every day.
In 2005, he got the idea for Jagriti, an Awakening Centre or Ashram on the mountains and discovered that Quinta El Remanso Andino, a newly constructed house in Apartaderos in Merida (Venezuela), was on sale. Although he did not have enough money at that time, its owner agreed to receive payment in installments and handover the house in 2005 even before the full payment. He sold his cars and a piece of land and paid the entire money in 2 years. Jagriti (The Awakening Centre) is his abode on the mountains where he organizes Yoga, Meditation, Spiritual retreats several times a year.
Dada Chidrupananda is non-sectarian and believes in the unity of mankind. He is also an expert on the spiritual aspects of Bible and imparts classes on it to students most of whom are Christians. He has two Ashrams in Venezuela -- this one at Apartaderos and another one at San Antonio de los Altos in the State of Miranda. He regularly travels to various countries to impart classes on Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda and Spiritual aspects of life.
