When to go to Slovenia
From exploring #Ljubljana to visiting Lake Bled, we run down the best time of year to go to #Slovenia.

The Solkan Bridge, Slovenia
The Solkan Bridge when opened on 19 July 1906 completed the railway line from Jesenice to Gorizia in what was then Austro Hungary - or more to the point it linked the capital Vienna with the fourth largest city and largest port in the Empire - Trieste. It was opened by the Austrian heir Franz Ferdinand who was the first passenger to travel across the Solkan Bridge.
This bridge was the largest stone bridge in the world when built (as you can see from the postcard) with an 85 metre arch. I believe that this is still the largest stone viaduct arch in the world.
It took around two years to complete. It was built by Brüder Redlich und Berger from Vienna.
In August 1916 Austrian engineers blew up the bridge, using 930 kg Ecrasite, as Italian forces advanced after the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo. After the battle of Caporetto, Gorizia was recaptured by the Austrians who managed to make temporary repairs to the bridge so it once more could be used for railway traffic.
After WW1 the bridge found itself in Italy and a new bridge was completed in 1927 which became (I think) the largest such steel construction for a railway bridge in the world. This is the bridge we see today. Attacks were made on it on 10 August 1944 and 15 March 1945 but they failed to even damage it. After WW2 the borders moved once again and the bridge found itself in Yugoslavia and now it is in Slovenia.

Early morning walk in Kobarid, Slovenia
Kobarid is best known by its Italian name, that of Caporetto and in this case for the battle that took place there in October 1917 and wherever we go in the town and around we are reminded of the first world war. But other than that Kobarid has much more to offer in the form of nature along the banks of the turquoise coloured Soca river. In this film, I go out for a walk to the outstanding Vielki Kozjak waterfall and discuss the history of the town, pointing out relics from WW1 and finishing with commentary on an ambush in WW2. Other than this, I also discuss nature and motorhome life!

The Solkan Bridge, Slovenia
The Solkan Bridge, Slovenia
The Solkan Bridge or Ponte di Salcano is a 219.7-meter or 721 ft arch bridge over the Soca River near Nova Gorica in western Slovenia, For the main arch, they needed 4533 exactly fitted stones of limestone. The bridge arch span of 85 meters or 279 ft, it is the longest stone bridge in the world and the longest stone bridge among train bridges. It holds the record as later construction technology used reinforced concrete to build bridges. It was originally built in the time of the Secession, between 1900 and 1905, and officially opened in 1906.
Grandiose architectural bridge design emphasizes the fact that the central arch support Solkan having a length of eighty-five meters, inferior in size only to the Chinese arch bridge Longmen Bridge, which was built in 1961 in the city of Luoyang. During the First World Austrians during the retreat blew up the bridge Solkan, but in 1927 it was restored and it was made a few design changes. So instead of five arches were erected four on each side of the bridge is not only hardened architectural design of buildings, but also to make Solkan even more beautiful. In 1985, the Government of Slovenia Solkansky bridge has made the list of national heritage and took custody of the state.
