Hranice, Czech Republic
There are three towns called Hranice in the Czech Republic. This one is in Moravia, in the east and in German was called Weißkirchen or Mährisch Weißkirchen when it was part of the Austro Hungarian Empire. My arrival was by accident, it was part of a jouney, a route I was following and I decided to stop and see. However it is well worth planning to go there. The main square is dominated by an enormous church but the view from the river rather than being dominated by a church, is dominated by a synagogue which survived the Nazi occupation by having the fortune to be designated a museum in 1940.
The town grew in the nineteenth century thanks to small industry, in particular the production of water pumps. The town had the largest factory for water pumps in Austria-Hungary.
The first Jews came at the beginning of the 17th century, receiving in 1637 the right for a self-governed Jewish quarter, around the present Janáčkova street (previously called Jew's street - ut. Židovská). Besides those 17 houses, they were not allowed to purchase houses elsewhere. The community reached 802 people in 1857, which was one eighth of the population of the town.
You can see more about the town in the film!

We first try Chlebicek which is a classic traditional Czech bread with open top. Served with a very rich cream with some ham, onions and topped with maybe egg, parsley, or any ingredient you like. This is mainly served at parties or gathering or on special events.
We then go for a controversial snack called a Trdelnik. It is quite gimmicky snack in Czech as it is not traditional as it surfaced recently. But it is one of those things you need to try when you do come Czech. Tourists absolutely love the Trdelnik and it is very cool for that instagram picture of your trip to Czech
We then try Tatarak. Sounds odd as it is raw beef. But when you mix the ingredients together and put on the fried bread with some garlic, WOW. You will be amazed how delicious it tastes and top it off with a Czech beer and i will say it is one of my favourite snacks. I added it in snacks as you can enjoy it with some friends and beer as you hang out. Not so great to eat it fully as a meal.
Next we tried some Zavináč Ryba which is picked herring fish with cabbages, red peppers and gerkins. This is one of my favourite as the sourness of the vinegar and fish comes together to be an unexpected taste. The fish is quickly boiled for couple of minutes, so it may seem raw but it is not. Enjoy it with a Rohlik which is a Czech bread roll.
You can grab this in any supermarket like Tesco, Albert or Billa in the food counters or sometimes packed in fridges.
Out last stop is some Czech Sweet snacks called Zákusky. We decided to group three options together of Špička which is a chocolate snack with mouse and liquor eggnog inside.
Then kremrole which is a puff pastry with some super light cream inside.
The final sweet snack is Větrník which is another caramel glazed pastry which i think tastes almost like a soft ice cream cone with a custardy filling in the middle.
We absolutely love these snacks and recommend you try them when you visit Czech Republic.
