Winter War Monument, Suomussalmi, Finland
As part of the pilgrimage I made with my daughter to Finland, the homeland of many of her ancestors, we visited Suomussalmi, from whence one of her great-grandfathers emigrated to America. It was the site of bitter and brutal fighting between Finns and invading (and soon decimated) Soviets during the 105-day Winter War in 1939-40, not to mention during the Continuation War not long after that. As my daughter learned, her last name, inherited with pride from her mother, is common in this district, and many of her clan paid with their lives during the war(s), according to a local historian. The Raatteen Portti Winter War Museum is located next to this memorial, and serves to start your journey along the memorial Raate Road, where one of the deciding battles of the Winter War was fought. Memorials to Finnish, Ukrainian and Russian troops who died along the frozen hell of the road can be seen as you continue toward the border, along with reconstructed trenches. Farther along, the Continuation War Museum is located where gates mark the boundary of the Finland-Russia border security zone.

Winter War Trenches: Along the Raate Road, Suomussalmi, Finland
On our recent pilgrimage to Finland, my daughter and I visited these trench-works along the Raate Road near Suomussalmi, a reconstructed element of Finland's Winter War (1939-40) with the USSR. These trenches were initially overrun by the Soviets, then retaken by the Finns as they decimated the under-prepared and ill-equipped Red Army troops in what is often referred to as a frozen hell of white death.

Two English photographers travelling to Hossa, Suomussalmi, Finland
Me and an old school friend who flew over from England for some hiking and hammocking in Finland, went backpacking in Hossa, Suomussalmi. We had some wet weather but we fished and hiked along the 'Pikku Hossa' Trail (Short Trail), had some fires, played some music, ate some fish, and swung in the hammocks. It was a good hillbilly time! :)

The company running the viewing (Bear Kuusamo) have a number of sites close to the Russian-Finnish border. You sit in wooden viewing sheds and they guarantee a 99% chance of seeing bears. They put food out in the evenings and so the bears have come to know the area will have food. In this video I also answer the time old question do bears sh*t in the woods?....!!!!!!!!

Ray Eden's Magic in Helsinki hits the road and travels to Northern Finland. Road Trip to Kuusamo highlights several stops along the way to Kuusamo and then back to Helsinki over 5 days.
In this episode, we stop at a beach along the way to Kuusamo. Anne swims, and I interview another Anne who is a part of a life-saving teaching group that happens to be at the beach. And there's firemen and a fire truck! Oh...and there's a bit of magic performed for the firemen!
