Theriso is a village and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Chania, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 74.106 km2 . It was part of the former Kydonia Province, which covered the central part of Chania Prefecture. The town of Theriso is located to the south of Chania at the top of the Theriso gorge. The 14 km drive up the gorge is considered spectacular and is popular with Chania residents for the cooler temperatures and grill restaurants of the village. The Samariá Gorge is a National Park of Greece since 1962 on the island of Crete – a major tourist attraction of the island – and a World's Biosphere Reserve. The gorge is in southwest Crete in the regional unit of Chania. It was created by a small river running between the White Mountains and Mt. Volakias. There are a number of other gorges in the White Mountains. While some say that the gorge is 18 km long, this distance refers to the distance between the settlement of Omalos on the northern side of the plateau and the village of Agia Roumeli. In fact, the gorge is 16 km long, starting at an altitude of 1,250 m at the northern entrance, and ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. Bike Touring in Greece - Bicycle touring movie

The full movie from my one week of bike touring in Greece. This bicycle tour started and finished in Athens, and covered about 600 kms of cycling. Along the way, I passed through the historic areas of Athens, Marathon, Thebes, Thermopylae, and Arachova.

Crete | Chania Region

Crete | Chania Region. Crete is unlike other Greek islands in that it has a clearly-defined feel and culture of its own. And if you get there via Chania, either by air or by passenger ferry, the Cretan feel is very intense.
There is enough to see in the town of Chania itself. But the Chania region covers the whole western bit of Crete, with its superb beaches and mountains and myriad villages waiting to be explored.
The oldest monastery in Crete, the Gouverneto, almost rubbing shoulders with the airport at Chania, is worth a visit for sheer atmosphere that reminds some people of old Spain or Mexico.
There's Kastelli beach and another idyllic one at Falassarna which are remote enough for even the most jaded tourist.
We've only just scratched the surface.
