Tirunelveli District was formed on 1 September 1790 by the East India Company , and comprised the present Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts and parts of Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram districts. It is the second-largest district , after Villupuram district. As of 2011, the district had a population of 3,077,233.

    Agasthiyar Falls is located close to Papanasam in Tirunelveli district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.     The Manimuthar Dam is located in Manimutharu 50.8 kilometres away from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, India. It the biggest reservoir of the Tirunelveli district.
