40 anniversary of students mountain guides association
Carpathian Troy is an open air museum newly built in Trzcinica, Poland. The museum, located in a tiny and unknown village in south-eastern Poland, is a breakthrough in the approach of presenting and promotion of archaeology. It will constitute a major tourist attraction in the region as well.
Archaeological research has been carried out in Trzcinica for 20 years now. The remains of a defensive settlement dated to as early as 2100 B.C. has been found here, as well as a truly breathtaking Early Medieval stronghold (780 A.D. -- 1030 A.D.), consisting of a central court and 3 wards. All giving a total size of over 3.5 hectares. Every single part of the stronghold was defended by earthworks, which in some parts are still as high as 10 meters.
Trzcinica is an amazing archaeological phenomenon! Over 160.000 artifacts have been discovered here, many of them constituting unique masterpieces of art.
To protect this spectacular archaeological site, make it available to tourists, and promote it, an open air museum has been built here with the support from EEA Grants. The project titled 'The Carpathian Troy Open Air Museum in Trzcinica -- a Regional Tourist Attraction' was started in October 2007, and completed in two-years' time.
The museum itself is unique. It consists of the area of the stronghold and archaeological part situated at the foot of it, giving a total coverage of around 8 hectares. This is a new approach to organization of archaeological open air museums, as Carpathian Troy combines traditional reconstructions of different aspects of material culture with modern exhibition technology. The open air museum comprises reconstructions of cottages, earthworks and gateways on one side, and a modern exhibition pavilion with multimedia exhibition hall, conference room, education rooms for children at different age, and cooking premises on the other. All facilities characteristic for a modern museum institution are available for tourists. It is definitely a new quality, a chance to let the history speak to visitors in an understandable language. Carpathian Troy is a modern face of the past.
Carpathian Troy is also a great chance for the local community. So far the region has been almost completely deprived of tourist attractions. At least a few tens of thousands of tourists are expected to visit Carpathian Troy every year. It will result in the development of Jasło and neighbouring areas, as far as accommodation and catering facilities, etc. are concerned. Numerous job opportunities will appear and the local society will be given a chance to partake in ambitious and entertaining cultural events.
The museum was due to open for visitors in July 2010, but just before the opening it suffered major flood damages. A part of the object was completely ruined. At the moment reconstruction works are in progress. The opening ceremony is scheduled for June 2011.
