Louise de La Vallière was a mistress of Louis XIV of France from 1661 to 1667. She later became the Duchess of La Vallière and Duchess of Vaujours in her own right. Unlike her rival, Madame de Montespan, she has no known surviving descendants. Louise was also very religious and she led a religious penance for herself near the end of her life.

On 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. A new village was built nearby after the war, but French president Charles de Gaulle ordered the original maintained as a permanent memorial and museum.

Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves near the village of Montignac, in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France. Over 600 parietal wall paintings cover the interior walls and ceilings of the cave. The paintings represent primarily large animals, typical local and contemporary fauna that correspond with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic time. The drawings are the combined effort of many generations, and with continued debate, the age of the paintings is estimated at around 17,000 years . Lascaux was inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1979, as element of the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.

The Château de Hautefort is a French château and gardens located in the town of Hautefort in the Dordogne. The castle originally was a medieval fortress that was reconstructed in the 17th century, and embellished with a Garden à la française. In 1853, the landscape architect, Count of Choulot, redid the gardens, adding a landscape garden, geometric flower gardens, topiary gardens imitating the domes of the château, and a long tunnel of greenery. Next to the formal gardens is a hill with an Italian garden with winding shaded paths. Notable trees in the park include a Magnolia grandiflora and a Cedar of Lebanon. The gardens are listed by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of the Ministry of Culture of France as one of the Notable Gardens of France.

find in this website the best furniture collection of The Palace of Versailles Style which was the official residence of the Kings of France from 1682 until 1790. It was originally a hunting lodge, built in 1624, by Louis XIII. It was expanded by Louis XIV beginning in 1669. He used it as a little lodge as a secret refuge for his amorous trysts with the lovely Louise de la Valliere and built a fairy tale park around it. Jules Hardouin Mansart, the king's principal architect, drew the plans to enlarge what was turning more and more into a palace from A Thousand and One Nights. The terrace that overlooked the gardens was removed to make way for the magnificent Hall of Mirrors, the Galarie de Glaces. It is here from which the king radiated his power and where the destiny of Europe was decided over a century. The French classical architecture was complemented by extensive gardens.

Classed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the Canal de la Robine is the main thoroughfare which gives the town its heartbeat. La Robine takes its name from the Occitan word Roubine which means Canal. Part of its route lies in what was once the riverbed of the Aude, called the Atax in ancient times and whose course was diverted after a series of floods in the 14th century.

In 1681, the Canal du Midi opened for business but it took another hundred years before the Robine was connected up to this major waterway by the Junction Canal. 32 km (20 miles) long, la Robine stretches from the Junction Canal, which links it to the Canal du Midi, all the way to the sea near the protected island of Sainte Lucie, passing straight through Narbonne on the way.

Lovers of calm waters can rent electric boats. Some may prefer the wonderfully tended banks of the canal in the shade of the centenary plane trees, for a delightful walk or bike ride. La Robine accommodates pleasure craft all year round along 2.5 km of moorings split into four quays
