Veneto was part of the Roman Empire until the 5th century AD. Later, after a feudal period, it was part of the Republic of Venice until 1797. Venice ruled for centuries over one of the largest and richest maritime republics and trade empires in the world.     The Riva degli Schiavoni is a waterfront in Venice, Italy. There is a lively - albeit often overcrowded - promenade along the waterfront. It sits on St. Mark's Basin. It was originally built in the ninth century from dredged silt and was named for the Slavic men who brought cargo to Venice from across the Adriatic Sea.

    Malamocco was the first, and for a long time, the only settlement on the Lido of Venice barrier island. It was the location of the original home of the Doge of Venice. Located just south of the island's center, it is part of the Lido-Pellestrina borough of the Comune of Venice.
