Places to see in ( Reims - France ) Reims
Reims is a city in northeastern France's Grand Est region. It's the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region, and many of the champagne houses headquartered there offer tastings and cellar tours. For more than 1,000 years, French kings were crowned at its Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims. This grand cathedral is known for its stained-glass windows and Gothic carved portals, including the Smiling Angel.
Reims (sometimes spelled Rheims in English), a city in northern France, is perhaps best known for its world heritage listed cathedral, where generations of French kings were crowned. It is also the largest city in the Champagne area and some the champagne cellars located in the city are likewise inscribed on the world heritage list.
Reims, the home of champagne (the most celebrated and celebratory wine in the world), is the main city of the Champagne area. It is a charming city, and one that the French hold dear to their hearts. There stands one of the most beautiful buildings of the Middle Ages in Europe, one that is filled with history: almost all French kings were crowned there for about 1,000 years. Most of the old houses were destroyed during World War I, and the city was extensively rebuilt in the 1920's in an Art Deco style.
No matter what you have read, nothing can prepare you for that first skyward glimpse of Reims’ gargantuan Gothic cathedral. Rising golden and imperious above the city, the cathedral is where, over the course of a millennium (816 to 1825), some 34 sovereigns – among them two dozen kings – began their reigns. Meticulously restored after WWI and again following WWII, Reims is endowed with handsome pedestrian boulevards, Roman remains, art-deco cafes and a flourishing fine-dining scene that counts among it four Michelin-starred restaurants. Along with Épernay, it is the most important centre of Champagne production, and a fine base for exploring the Montagne de Reims Champagne Route.

The Historical Heart of France - Reims, France
Reims, located only about 80 miles east of Paris, is a city rich in history and popular today for its location in the heart of France's champagne region. Reims dates back to the Roman era and Roman ruins can be found in the city. The first king of the Franks was anointed here, beginning the long tradition of for the kings of France, many of whom were also buried here. More recently it is where the Germans surrendered to General Dwight Eisenhower's team to end World War II in Europe.
The Photos (in order)
E09A3336 - Porte de Mars is a 43-foot-tall 108-foot-long Roman triumphal arch, one of a handful of Roman ruins that have survived in the city
E09A3412 - Parts of Basilique St. Remi, the St. Remi Basilica, date back to 1007AD, making it the oldest church in Reims; it includes the elaborate tomb of St. Remi; others buried here include Carloman King of the Franks (brother of Charlemagne), Lothair I and King Louis IV; in the courtyard in front of the south entrance to the church is a statue commemorating St. Remi's baptism of Clovis I
E09A3406 - Abbaye Royale St. Remi was founded in the 6th century, and would go on to become one of the most richly endowed abbeys in France; Basilique St. Remi was originally constructed to serve as the abbey church; today the abbey functions as a history museum focused on St. Remi and the local community.
E09A3396 - The Cathedrale Notre Dame de Reims marks the site where St. Remi, the bishop of Reims, baptized Clovis, the king of the Salian Franks, in 496AD, an event that many regard as the origin of France; all of the kings of France from Louis the Pious in 815 to Charles X in 1825 ultimately were anointed at this site, with the exceptions of Louis VI and Henry IV; Joan of Arc was instrumental in getting Charles VII to the church on time in 1429; there is a statue of her in front of the church
E09A3310 - In the waning days of World War II, General Eisenhower and his team set up a command post in a Reims school; it was in the map room of that facility where the German military leadership came to negotiate what they had hoped would be a western front ceasefire but ended up signing an unconditional surrender on May 7, 1945; the surrender was announced the next day and a second more public event took place in Berlin, so the Reims surrender is not as well known as it ought to be; today the school is home to the Salle de Reddition Museum, which provides information about the events surrounding the surrender and preserves the map room
E09A3329 - The map room in which the German surrender was negotiated has been preserved in its mostly original state
E09A3341 - Charles de Cazenove Champagne House is one of a number of champagne producers in and around Reims; many offer tours
E09A3351 - Place Royale features a statue of King Louis XV; in the distance down the street is the Hotel de Ville, Reims city hall
