11 Days in SCOTLAND
Here are the highlights of my road trip to Scotland. All scenes shot with DJI Mavic Pro/iPhoneX with Moment Lenses/GoPro Hero5, also assited by the Zhiyun Smooth 4 Gimbal.
I grew up in this scenic country, so going back to take time exploring it to great depths, was very humbling.
Landmarks recorded - Isle of Skye: Old Man of Storr/Fairy Glen/Fairy Pools/Neist Point/Eilean Donan Castle/Kilt Rock amongst other places that didn't make the final cut.
Highlands: Camster Cairns/Duncansby Head/Whaligoe Steps/Brough Pier/Ackergill Tower/Reiss Beach
If any of you wish to visit Caithness (Highlands) it is a lot less touristy. Isle of Skye is very busy in peak season with tourists visiting from all over the world, if you wish to visit any landmarks, I advise going very early, or later in the day to beat the rush - as we all know, crowds ruin 'that shot'.

Day 1: After reaching Inverness from Livingston, we headed north from Inverness to Chanonry point for our first stop and were very lucky to spot dolphins and seals.
From there we headed west stopping at Rogie Falls heading for our overnight stay at Applecross Campsite via the famous Bealach Na Ba (Pass of the Cattle)
We also got to follow a nice TVR Cerbera for a while.
Here is a map I made of our rough itinerary, feel free to use it if you wish:

Day 2: We headed from Applecross campsite north-west a short distance around the Applecross peninsula before deciding to turn around and head back down the Bealach Na Ba.
From there we headed north to Shieldaig to pick up some lunch for later from the Loch Torridon Smokehouse. From there we headed through the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve and stopped at Loch Clair for lunch. Stunning scenery and no better place to stop and enjoy the delicious salmon we had picked up earlier.
Our next stop we had planned was Red Point Beach, it was worth the drive! Totally secluded and so remote, we had the whole beach to ourselves and it was even warm and sunny!
We headed to Corrieshalloch Gorge after that and again it was stunning scenery around every corner.
From there it was a drive to our second campsite at Ardmair Point, what a perfect pitch we had! We popped into Ullapool for dinner and a drink then back to the tent just in time to watch the sunset.
Music: SynetraX - All My Sins
Day 3: After packing the tent away in torrential rain in the morning at Ardmair Point we headed north to Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve.
We had planned on going to see the Bone Caves after that but we must've driven straight past the car park without noticing, will do that the next time! The weather was starting to clear as we reached our next stop, Ardvreck Castle.
Our next destination was Lochinver for some of the famous Lochinver Larders pies! After that, it was time for something a bit special at Achmelvich Beach. With the sun starting to occasionally appear through the clouds, Claire was going snorkelling at Achmelvich! This is part of the newly launched NW Highlands Snorkel trail that was thought up by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Check out the full video here:
After getting dried off we headed further north passing through some stunning scenery, seen some super cars, had a stop for some tea then a drive over the Kylesku Bridge.
Our final destination of the day was our campsite for that night at Sango Sands Oasis in Durness. It was about 30 miles north and involved some of the most remote roads yet. The weather was fine when we reached the campsite but as soon as we got the tent half set we got hit by another rain storm! Waterproofs on, finished setting up the tent, 20 minutes later the sun was out!

Day 5: 9:30am and it was already 19°. After getting the car packed in Sango Sands Oasis campsite, Durness. It was time to get going for the day. Our first stop was Cocoa Mountain before heading to Smoo Cave.
Our next stop was Strathy Point, we were hoping to sit there for a while and hopefully see some whales. However, after quite a drive and finally reaching the car park, there were signs up saying no dogs allowed. So we jumped back in the car and went in search for lunch.
After passing the Dounreay nuclear site and passing through Thurso we arrived at our next stop, the Rock Rose gin distillery in Dunnet. And were greeted by an empty car park and a 'closed on Sundays' sign, dammit. So we headed to Dunnet Head, the most northerly point on mainland Britain.
From there we headed to John O' Groats for a picture next to the famous sign. Then on to Duncansby Head the see the sea stacks and celebrate our first year wedding anniversary by launching a message in a bottle out to sea.
Our final stop for the night was at the Norseman Hotel in Wick for a good nights sleep in an actual bed before our journey home the next day.
On our way home we stopped at an old cairn, the amazing Whaligoe Steps, Loch Fleet, the Dalmore Distillery, seen the mermaid of the north and stopped in Inverness for dinner. Then it was our final 160 miles to the house.
A truly amazing 5-day journey!

Old Photographs Wick Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Wick in Caithness, located the on the North coast of Highlands. The name Wick comes from the Norse word, Vik meaning bay. Wick was granted the title of Royal Burgh in 1589. However, it was in the 1800s that Wick enjoyed its greatest prosperity as a thriving herring port, in time becoming the busiest in Europe. Work to enable the development of the huge seasonal herring fishing first began in 1803 under the auspices of the British Fisheries Society. By the time trade at Wick peaked around 1900 there was a fleet 1120 strong. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Walking Tour Of The Region Surrounding Ullapool Highlands Of Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of photographs of a small group walking tour of the region surrounding Ullapool in the Scottish Highlands. The area surrounding Ullapool is dominated by rugged mountains, and especially by Bheinn Ghobblach to the west, An Teallach to the south west, Beinn Dearg to the south east close to the head of Loch Broom, and Ben Mhòr na Còigich to the north. An Teallach is a massive mountain which dominates the area and consists of Torridonian sandstone, which is layered nearly horizontally. It is an easy climb but is several miles from the nearest road, so a long trek is needed before the ascent begins.
John o' Groats - FULL VIDEO TOUR (Scotland, UK)
We decided to drive up to John o' Groats! It's the furthest north place you can visit when driving within the UK. There isn't a whole lot to do there, but there is a cool lighthouse to mark the lands end. You can also use this opporunity to walk the glen! lol. A couple of miles drive, you can see the second half of the video. This is John o' Groats town center. There is a place to sign your name if you're an 'End to Ender' (Running or more typically cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats). There is a gift shop and also a place to eat. It's a really nice drive, highly recommended!! Unfortunately, I receive a lovely speeding ticket from the local police, bunch of nice guys!
---------------
John o' Groats (Scottish Gaelic: Taigh Iain Ghròt) is a village 2.5 miles (4 km) NE of the village of Canisbay, Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. John o' Groats lies on Great Britain's northeastern tip, and is popular with tourists as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited British points on the mainland, with Land's End in Cornwall lying 876 miles (1,410 km) to the southwest. It is not the most northerly point on the island of Britain (nearby Dunnet Head is farther north).
John o' Groats is 690 miles (1,110 km) from London, 280 miles (450 km) from Edinburgh, 6 miles (9.7 km) from the Orkney Isles and 2,200 miles (3,500 km) from the North Pole. It is 4.25 miles (6.84 km) from the uninhabited island of Stroma.
A passenger ferry operates from John o' Groats to Burwick on South Ronaldsay in Orkney.
-----
Land's End to John o' Groats is the traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain between two extremities, in the southwest and northeast. The traditional distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists 10 to 14 days; the record for running the route is nine days. Off-road walkers typically walk about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months for the expedition. Two much-photographed signposts indicate the traditional distance at each end.
Land's End is the traditionally acknowledged extreme southern point of mainland England. It is in western Cornwall at the end of the Penwith peninsula. The O.S. Grid Reference of the road end is SW342250, Post Code TR19 7AA. In fact it, or strictly speaking Dr Syntax's Head, SW341253, a few hundred yards NW of the road end, is mainland England's most westerly point. The most southerly point is Lizard Point, about 9 miles (14 km) further south. Land's End is sometimes reckoned incorrectly as mainland England's most southwesterly point. This accolade belongs to Gwennap Head, SW365215, which is at least 2 miles (3.2 km) further south than Dr Syntax's Head but only about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) less west.
John o' Groats is the traditionally acknowledged extreme northern point of mainland Scotland, in northeastern Caithness, O.S. Grid Reference ND380735, Post Code KW1 4YR. The actual northernmost point is Dunnet Head about 2 miles (3 km) further north. The point that is farthest by road from Land's End is Duncansby Head, about 2 miles (3 km) east of John o' Groats. Duncansby Head is also the most northeasterly point of the Scottish mainland. The straight-line distance from Land's End to John o' Groats is 603 miles (970 km) as determined from O.S. Grid References, but such a route passes over a series of stretches of water in the Irish Sea. Google Earth reports a distance of 602.70 miles between the two iconic marker points.
