Yulin , formerly romanized as Watlam, is one of the fourteen prefecture-level cities of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China. Its Chinese name was changed in 1956 from the historical name 鬱林 , which only sounds the same in Mandarin as the current one, but very different in the local dialect of Yue Chinese; 鬱 is uat˥ while 玉 is ȵok˨. The former romanization follows the pronunciation of the historical name in Yue Chinese.

    The history of the Great Wall of China began when fortifications built by various states during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods were connected by the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, to protect his newly founded Qin dynasty against incursions by nomads from Inner Asia. The walls were built of rammed earth, constructed using forced labour, and by 212 BC ran from Gansu to the coast of southern Manchuria.     Tongwancheng or Tongwan City was the capital of the Southern Xiongnu, the only city of the Xiongnu that has ever been found. The city is well preserved and is located in Jingbian County, Shaanxi Province, China, close to Inner Mongolia. The city is at the southern edge of the Maowusu Sands of the Ordos Desert, on what was formerly a strategic site in the centre of the Ordos plateau. The city has been surveyed and some elements restored, but not yet excavated. The city was built by around 100,000 Xiongnu of the Xia kingdom under the command of Helian Bobo in 419, the Xiongnu having founded their steppe empire in the 3rd century BC.
