Key Largo to Key West ... Palm Trees & Blue Ocean
Video footage of Key Largo to Key West. Upper Keys to the Lower. The clearest natural salt water Ive ever seen. We happen to roll in just as the sun was rising so i switched on the camera. Opens with a sunrise sky, the seven mile bridge, sand pipers along the inter-coastal, palm trees along the way and the clean water of the keys. The clear water really blew me away. you cant believe it until you see it. Especially if youre used to the clouded waters of other beaches.
The weather was perfect and couldn't have asked for anything more. Well, maybe a fishing pole. and an underwater camera. The water was so blue with patches of green and whites. Different shades of blue, not used to that. I'm used to dark colored, brackish water of the St Johns River and foamy sudsy Shores of the Atlantic further up in the state. The waters don't compare.
Arrived in Largo when the sun was coming up.
The fish in the video appear to be just under the surface, yet they are about 2+ feet down. That's how clear the water is in the keys. The water in another area was so clear that 4+ ft down to the bottom looks like its only about 12 inches deep. Amazing for natural salt water.
The man making the bird gave me permission to record & broadcast him and his cool, rugged, hand made woven hats & birds. The bird somehow actually flew a long distance and rode the air current. Don't know how, it was heavy. He made them out of the palm fronds green or dead & sells them to make his living. He uses the coconut palm fronds since that is one of the most common palms in south Florida.
We saw the signs to watch for Key Deer (the endangered miniature deer indigenous to the keys), but didn't see any of them. I neglected to take photos of the signs.
Did see some chickens and that was funny to me since i know other cities don't allow for 'farm' animals... was very unusual to see them just about everywhere we went. Didn't see but one wild iguana.

In this Florida Keys Catch and Cook episode:
We start our 420 weekend visiting Windley Fossil Reef Geological State Park. There are some nature trails at Windley Fossil Reef that are pretty cool. I recommend checking the place out!
After some non catch and cook Windley Fossil Reef nature trails we head to Robbies to feed the tarpon. I catch tarpon feeding in slow motion with my new camera which is pretty cool. The tarpon get us excited for some offshore fishing and my 420 weekend friends are ready to catch and cook fish (no not because of the munchies) Maybe from the saltlife beer we have to drink.
Ok, it's the 420 munchies and not the saltlife beer. So let's go yellowtail snapper fishing! We put the boat in a John Pennekamp coral reef state park and head out south to do some offshore fishing. We start off bottom fishing with ballyhoo and quickly catch some fish. We catch a barracuda vertical jigging. Then we catch a monster yellowtail snapper. It's officially a catch and cook fish episode! More of a snapper catch clean cook than anything at this point here in the Florida Keys. Key largo to be specific.
I have a great time fishing the florida keys. I always seem to catch clean cook fish everytime I go offshore fishing. Today we wern't just vertical jigging and bottom fishing but we were also spearfishing! Chris missed a nice mutton snapper. That would have been great for the catch and cook, but the yellowtail snapper will still be great to fuel the 420 munchies.
I catch mutton snapper in the next fishing episode so don't you worry about that! And I will be doing a lot of spearfishing this year so be prepared for more of that here in the Florida keys. I love spearfishing key largo, but make sure you know you are in a legal spot to spearfish in Key Largo as you cannot spearfish in the John Pennekamp state park reef boundaries.
Jordan also catch a black grouper, but on 420 the grouper were not in season. May 1 the grouper are in season so this won't be a grouper catch n cook luckily for this black grouper we caught. But there will be a black grouper spearfishing video coming out soon. No fish will be safe from Heiko Winkler this spearfishing season out of Key Largo.
I hope you enjoyed this 420 Weekend Special. Fishing the Florida Keys Catch and Cook fishing episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel. Please leave a like and comment to show your support. Thank you!

Here's addition information on the Blue Heron Bridge:
This video was shot with a GoPro 3+ Silver and the OrcaTorch D810V video light.
Click here for our review on the light:
Blue Heron Bridge Overview:
The Blue Heron Bridge is the premier beach dive site in the country! And the best part about it, it’s in our backyard! It’s so popular that there’s even a Blue Heron Bridge Dive Club Facebook Page that we recommend all divers to join.
The Blue Heron Bridge is a FREE beach dive and is accessible from Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach, Florida.
EVEN THE PARKING IS FREE AT THE BLUE HERON BRIDGE!
Diving the Blue Heron Bridge is permitted 7 days a week, sunrise to sunset.
With the Blue Heron Bridge being a tide-dependent dive, enter the water no earlier than one hour before high tide, and be out no later than one hour after high tide. Doing a dive which is a half hour before and after high tide is recommended for people not familiar with diving here.
Blue Heron Bridge Tube-Dwelling Anemone The bridge is home to countless creatures, small and large, so take your time, don’t rush! Be on the constant lookout, especially for those smaller creatures which may be hiding. On busy days, well over 100 divers will scuba and snorkel the Blue Heron Bridge. Be observant of your surroundings so you don’t get tangled up with someone else’s flag or the bridge itself.
When navigating around the Blue Heron Bridge, remember not to scuba dive in the swim area. Scuba in this area is not permitted. But don’t worry, the lifeguards are cool with divers surface swimming.
Like most dive sites in South Florida, a dive flag is a must at the Blue Heron Bridge. You run the risk of getting a ticket if you enter the water without a flag. TRUE STORY.
Diving The Blue Heron Bridge:
There are 3 primary dive areas of the Blue Heron Bridge:
• The Blue Heron Bridge East Span
• The Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail (South of the bridge)
• The Blue Heron Bridge West Span
Blue Heron Bridge East Span:
The East Span of the Blue Heron Bridge is a little over 20ft deep. There is minimal light here, so many divers bring a light with them. Under the bridge you will find pilings and small sunken boats that many creatures at the Blue Heron Bridge call home.
For the geographically challenged, the East Span of the Blue Heron Bridge is on your left as you’re walking to the water.
Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail:
The area straight out from the beach sits in 6-10 feet of water and is the shallowest area of the Blue Heron Bridge. 600 tons of limestone boulders and prefabricated reef modules were used to build the 800-foot-long Snorkel Trail. The various shaped piles are separated with a trail of smaller boulders. After the Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail was completed in August 2012, sea life quickly made these newly placed reefs their home.
To dive the Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail, enter the water from the beach and swim south (straight out). Once you reach a reef module, continue on by exploring east and west Be careful not to enter the boat channel near the West Span when you’re diving the western portion of the Blue Heron Bridge Snorkel Trail.
Blue Heron Bridge West Span:
The first rule of Fight Club the West Span is to NEVER enter the boat channel! To dive the West Span of the Blue Heron Bridge, enter the water on the right side of the beach. This side of the bridge is where many divers see seahorses! If you stay close to the bridge footings, you will see where the boat channel begins. Fortunately for us divers, it’s pretty easy to recognize, as the last set of bridge footings looks like a wall. Once you reach the wall, do not explore any further west. The other side of the wall is the boat channel.
Blue Heron Bridge Seahorse near the Beach With the West Span of the Blue Heron Bridge having many smaller organisms, take your time. You can explore the pilings by zig-zagging back and forth. Make sure to scope out the growth below and between the pilings as well as the bottles/cans/trash that cover the West Span. From our experience, there are always fire worms and scorpion fish here, so watch where you put your hands (Wear gloves!). Both will cause a ton of pain! The max depth here is about 20ft.
