Top Things to See at Glacier National Park | 10K-mile Road Trip Vlog 47
Here are the top 5 things to do and see in Glacier National Park, Montana, from driving along the Going-to-the-Sun Road to the best hikes and seeing waterfalls and wildlife along the way. See below for more details:
1. Going-to-the-Sun Road
This is a 50-mile road that crosses the park and has epic views almost the entire way. It takes the term scenic highway to a level you never thought possible. Lots of turnoffs along the way to stop for pictures. The road is covered in snow and impassible for most of the year. It is usually only open from late June/early July through mid-October. Check the National Park Service page for exact open and close dates:
Even if you don't have time to do any hikes, just driving along this road is worth the trip. We cannot get over how pretty the scenery is.
2. Hike the Highline Trail (at Logan Pass)
The Highline Trail is the most scenic and breathtakingly beautiful trail I've ever been on. The views over the valley below are incredible. The flowers are colorful and gorgeous. And since you start at Logan Pass with an elevation of over 6600 feet, you don't have to do any work to get the amazing views. You may have to get over your fear of heights, but it's totally worth it. DON'T RUN and DON'T WALK BACKWARDS on this trail - two things I did and I can attest that neither one is smart.
3. Hike Hidden Lake (at Logan Pass)
Hidden Lake is a short hike (1.3 miles) from the visitor center at Logan Pass. It's completely exposed to the sun the entire time. It's always busy. Always. You will see mountain goats on this trail. They're everywhere.
4. Sun Point at Saint Mary Lake
About 15 minutes past Logan Pass is Sun Point. There's a large parking lot right there so it's only a 0.1 mile hike out to the point and it's so pretty. You can see so many mountains and you have such a great view over the lake in all directions.
5. McDonald Falls and Lake McDonald
On the north side of Lake McDonald, turn on North Lake McDonald Road and drive for about 2 minutes to the small parking area on your right. You'll see a trailhead for McDonald Creek. That will take you to the waterfall. Look for deer along this trail (we saw two). You can follow the trail out to Lake McDonald too.
For up-to-date info on road closures, fires, and weather, check out the Glacier National Park site:

Glacier National Park - Lake McDonald on a clear winter day
On this cold, yet clear December day, water gently laps on the shore of Lake McDonald. To many visitors to the park, this view is their first introduction to the spectacular scenery of Glacier National Park. This iconic view from Apgar, at the foot of Lake McDonald, really shows what Glacier is all about...big glacially carved lakes, vast wild views of the high peaks along the Continental Divide, and the ever-changing forests that blanket much of the lower elevations. It's no wonder that for many people when they think of Glacier, they think of this view - December 17, 2010 (dr)

Glacier National Park (slideshow)
I've been working on this video for some time, to show off a bit of Glacier National Park in northern Montana. The pictures shown were taken by me and my wife, my brother and sister-in-law, and my Mom.
Glacier National Park is an amazing place to visit, and I highly recommend it. Beware The Going To the Sun Road; however, it's easy on the eyes but hard on the heart.

Glacier National Park Aerial footage in 4K (Phantom 3) - LAKE McDONALD 2015 (West Glacier, Montana)
Beautiful aerial photography of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, Montana! This was filmed in West Glacier mid- June of 2015 with the Dji Phantom 3. Lake McDonald is right inside the park on the Going to The Sun Road. It's so beautiful. There are usually very few waves and it is often as smooth as glass. -|| MORE GLACIER VIDEOS ||-

West Glacier KOA West Glacier MT
Pine-scented campsites here are a mere 2.5 miles from Glacier National Park's west entrance. A short drive of a few minutes brings you to the start of the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road that twists and climbs across the million-acre alpine preserve. Whitefish, Kalispell and Flathead lakes are within driving distance to explore for part of a day with plenty of time left to relax at this KOA. A local photographer hosts wildlife slide shows twice a week. Experience the log-fashioned pavilion lodge that houses a pool table, satellite television and a fireplace. This KOA also offers a game room, heated pool and hot tubs. Enjoy breakfast services as well as Dinner with Gene. You can treat yourself to huckleberry ice cream at Scoops Ice Cream Shoppe or head to the state's largest water park in nearby Columbia Falls.

The Colored Pebbles Of Lake McDonald , Glacier National Park
The Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana, on the border with Canada, is home to more than 700 lakes, although only 131 of these lakes have names. Approximately 200 lakes are over five acres in size, and a dozen of them exceeds thousands of acres, which in unusual for mountain lakes. Additionally, the waters of the lakes are remarkably clear. This is owning to the year long low temperatures that prohibit the growth of planktons. It is not unusual to see details on the bottom of the lakes at depths of 30 feet or more.
One of the most striking feature of some of these lakes is the presence of a variety of colored rocks and pebbles just below the water surface and on the shores. The rocks range in color from dark red to maroon, and from green to blue. Colored pebbles are seen in abundance on the shores of Lake McDonald on the western side of the park. Lake McDonald is the largest of the lakes of Glacier National Park with a surface area of 6,823 acres. It is also the longest, at over 15 km, as well as the deepest lake at 141 meters.
