One of my favorite childhood memories was of watching Hilo Hattie perform. She brought smiles to so many faces! I apologize because there is no sound. This is a home movie my mother took.

Hilo is the county seat of the County of Hawaiʻi and is located in the District of South Hilo.[2] The town overlooks Hilo Bay, situated upon two shield volcanoes; Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the site of some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories. Hawaii Vacation Travel: Hilo Hattie Hula in Waikiki 1937 Color Kodachrome
Hilo Hattie performs with her halau at Waikiki's Sans Souci Beach in November 1937. Kodak did not perfect their Kodachrome film processing until 1938, so many Kodachrome films from 1934-1937 have suffered aging damage and color shifts and fading.

Hilo Hawaii - Things To Do In Hilo Once Your Ship Docks At The Hilo Cruise Terminal
This is a simple video of the actual dock where Cruise Ships stop when in Hilo Hawaii. This can be a big help in planning your day if you are considering what to do once you get there like just walk around town or visit museums or instead take a more elaborate excursion.
The Hilo Hawaii Cruise Terminal is a short 2 1/2 mile drive from downtown Hilo. I made this short Hilo Cruise Port video to give you an idea of what to expect once you dock.
First of all you can see that it is an actual dock and you are not tendered into town on smaller boats like you are in ports like Kona and Lahaina on Maui.
The port didn't have any shops, restaurants or anything to offer those that would like to just hop off the ship for a couple of hours but you can take a free shuttle to the local Hilo Hatties store and Walmart-- But you probably didn't travel all this way to go to Walmart.
For a lesser priced excursion you could choose a Hilo city tour that includes the impressive Rainbow Waterfall, or you could be a bit more adventurous and travel to the top of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world. For more on Mauna Kea you might want to check out my video of the Big Island where we almost get snowed in at the top of the mountain and had to cut our excursion short.

February 25, 2015 Dennis Francis speaks to the Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce and the Big Island Press Club about the future of newspapers in general, and the vision for Hawaii Island’s two newspapers.
WHT excerpt Francis is in charge of Black Press Group Ltd.’s operations in Hawaii, and is publisher of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. He also serves as president of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and West Hawaii Today, which were acquired by Black Press in December.
Francis has more than 30 years of senior newspaper management experience in markets that include Ohio, South Carolina, Washington, D.C., Vermont and Hawaii. He was honored as a Gannett Top 10 Executive of the Year for Performance in 1996, 1998 and 2001. Francis is active in several Oahu organizations.

Hawaii 2014: Hilo Hattie Guinness Book of World Record's Largest Aloha Shirt
Hilo Hattie offers Hawaii's largest selection of Hawaiian fashions, gifts, souvenirs, t-shirts, home and beach accessories, beauty products, gourmet foods and stunning Island jewelry.
The Nimitz store is also the home to the world’s largest aloha shirt, measuring 168 inches (14 feet) around the chest, 161 inches at the waist and more than 60 inches around the neck! . Koa wood beverage coasters were used as the buttons. It took 26 yards of fabric to create the shirt (size 400XL), which was recognized as the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of Records in 1999. According to the company, 13 sumo wrestlers can be fitted for the amount of fabric required to make the shirt.
