Human-piloted racing mech shows off skills in California
(22 May 2018) LEADIN:
A Canadian startup is showcasing a human-piloted, off-road machine that it hopes will usher in a new sport it calls mech racing.
Vancouver-based Furrion Exo-Bionics is making the first public demonstration of Prosthesis at a tech festival in San Mateo, California.
STORYLINE:
It weighs about 8,500 pounds and stands around 15 feet tall, 'Prosthesis' - as it's known - is operated by a human pilot that stands inside the machine.
From there, the pilot is able to control its movements with his arms and legs.
Furrion co-founder Jonathan Tippett is showcasing Prosthesis at San Mateo's Maker Faire tech festival.
He's able to make the electric machine do push-ups, squat, turn and walk, as visitors cheer on.
So, the machine weighs eight and a half thousand pounds, like 3,800 kilograms, says Tippett.
But, it can stand up in half a second. It's engineered for a theoretical top speed of about 30 kilometres an hour, but we're nowhere near attaining that because there's so much skill involved in just learning how to balance and control the machines.
Tippett says his company hopes to build more racing mechs and eventually create a new sports league in which machines with human pilots compete in contests.
That could involve running, jumping, climbing and lifting heavy objects.
Mech racing at its core is a celebration of human skill, says Tippett.
It's kind of an extension of other kinds of sports that we're familiar with. So, we are just figuring out what the race format will be like. We'll never compete with wheeled machines for speed, but there's things that mechs can do that wheeled machines can't do, like climb, and push, and lift things and step over troughs, or trenches, or barriers, or obstacles.
Mechs have been popularised in science fiction movies, such as Pacific Rim and Avatar.
The other thing humans are interested in doing is sort of giving ourselves superpowers, says Dale Dougherty, the founder and CEO of Maker Faire.
And this is what Prosthesis is, it's an extension of a person to give them more power. So, it isn't just the racing, it's kind of redefining what it means to be human.

Bay Area Maker Faire 2015
2 days of invention and innovation from the Bay Area Maker Faire packed in to a 5 minute highlight reel. By no means everything covered, but I hope it gives an idea of the amazing activities more than 150,000 visitors were part of this weekend. From cutting edge high tech, to traditional arts and crafts and everything in-between. Interesting to see the major Silicon Valley tech companies embracing the Maker culture, and to see companies like Facebook not promoting their platform or software but their hackathon-created hardware (their data centers are run almost entirely on hardware concepted during company hackathons - build over buy). Key trends I would call out - including for their increased accessibility through the Maker community - the continued evolution of 3D printing technology and the supporting ecosystem, wearables and the meshing of fashion and functionality, drones, and the I of T.
Makers in the Nursing Unit: Lessons Learned from America's Amazing MakerNurses - Jose Gomez-Marquez
MakerNurse launched last year to find inventive nurses around the country who combine the Maker ethic with their own mission to heal patients. This is the state of DIY Medical Technologies the makers behind them around the country today. From the Bay Area Maker Faire 2014 Center Stage.

The 2017 Maker Faire Bay Area was a monster success, please check out the video which includes some of the biggest YouTube Stars!
Tim O'Reilly introduction at Maker Faire 2010 San Mateo California (live stream excerpt)
Tesla Coils - Arc Attack - Makers Faire 2010 - San Mateo - No. 2
ArcAttack employs a unique DJ set up of their own creation to generate an 'electrifying' audio visual performance. The HVDJ pumps music through a PA system while two specially designed DRSSTC's (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils) act as separate synchronized instruments. These high tech machines produce an electrical arc similar to a continuous lightning bolt and put out a crisply distorted square wave sound reminiscent of the early days of synthesizers. i filmed this video @ makers faire san mateo expo center.... web site:

I think the idea was that the machine could sense when they touched, shifting weights at the back of each arm which in turn moved the two people away from each other.
