Former President Jimmy Carter returned to his regular spot at the head of his weekly Sunday School class this week. He normally teaches class at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Ga., every Sunday morning, when his health and travels permit.
Former President Jimmy Carter teaches church
(3 Nov 2019) Former President Jimmy Carter taught a Bible lesson on life after death Sunday less than two weeks after breaking his pelvis in a fall.
Using a walker, the 95-year-old Democrat slowly entered the crowded sanctuary at Maranatha Baptist Church in the southwest Georgia town of Plains.
With help, Carter sat on a motorized lift chair at the front of the room to teach a 45-minute lesson based on the Old Testament book of Job.
After telling a story about a cancer diagnosis that resulted in the removal of part of his liver in 2015, Carter said he has complete confidence in his belief in life after death.
More than 400 people were on hand in the main hall and smaller, overflow rooms where the lesson was shown on television.
Carter was briefly hospitalized and has since been recovering at home since fracturing his pelvis on Oct. 21. He also fell shortly before that and needed stitches above his left eye.
Carter is the oldest U.S. ex-President ever and has been teaching Bible lessons since he was in his teens. He missed one Sunday school class after the pelvis fracture.
Carter remained for the worship service after teaching, sitting in a pew beside his wife, Rosalynn, and singing hymns with the congregation.

Carter told attendees at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains that he and his wife, Rosalynn, have nursing care at home and are doing fine, and he thanked them for their prayers and good wishes.
The 94-year-old Carter broke his hip last month at his home when he fell while leaving to go turkey hunting. He subsequently had hip replacement surgery.

President Jimmy Carter Teaches Sunday School in Georgia, 2002
In 2002, Nancy and I had the distinct pleasure of attending a Sunday School class at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, the birthplace of our 39th President. We arrived early on the line on a very cold morning. We had just visited the Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and were driving west across the southern part of the United States to board a Holland America Lines ship for a 15 day cruise to, around, and a return from the islands of Hawaii.Since we were very early (7:30 am) we were virtually in front of the line, and after a lecture from one of his former staff members, a retired school teacher, on how to conduct ourselves inside the church, and an interesting lecture from the current minister, President Carter took to the lectern within three feet of us, seated in the front row, and he proceeded to teach the Sunday morning biblical lesson with my video camera virtually looking up his nose. To say that it was an interesting experience would be a great understatement as this was the Christmas season and Plains Georgia was lit up with literally millions of Christmas lights and well lit angels, etc. During the day we managed a visit to his very humble boyhood home, and saw where the President and Rosalyn currently reside. What was most exciting was that this was the week that he was going to Europe to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and he told us all about his adventures that week before beginning his Sunday School lesson. For myself, of the Jewish faith, it was an experience that I will never forget. Enjoy! Stuart and Nancy Namm
Carter talks Trump, China and leadership at church
(9 Jun 2019) Former President Jimmy Carter is back to teaching Sunday school in Georgia after taking time off to undergo surgery for a broken hip.
Speaking to attendees at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Carter shared a recent conversation he had with President Donald Trump.
Carter said Trump voiced concerns about China becoming a superpower, and had suggested that the Chinese were getting way ahead of the United States.
The exchange prompted Carter to ask the congregation what the word 'superpower' means.
It's not just who has the most powerful military, but who is a champion of the finer things in life, Carter said.
He concluded by adding that peace, environment, human rights and equality are the teachings of Jesus Christ, and that these are things all Christians should believe in.
Carter, who's 94, broke his hip last month when he fell at home while leaving to go turkey hunting.
He subsequently had hip replacement surgery.
The former first lady was also hospitalized around the same time for what Carter said was initially thought to be a stroke, but turned out to be less serious.
A devout Christian, Carter regularly teaches Sunday school in Plains.

President Jimmy Carter & Frank Shelton
On May 12, 2013 the 39th President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter graciously called on Evangelist Frank Shelton to open in prayer during his Sunday School lesson at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, GA. Frank had the pleasure to meet President Carter two other times. The first was on April 27, 1997 while in Philadelphia, PA as President & Mrs Carter were exiting a restaurant after having dinner with President George H.W. Bush, First Lady Barbara Bush, Gen Colin & Alma Powell & Gov Tom Ridge (R-PA). They were in town for President Clinton's Volunteer Summit. The second time was in Plains, GA on June 11, 2000. The President did a phenomenal job talking about leadership and he said: Jesus Christ is the greatest leader of all time. President Carter had just returned from Ireland the day before and he was sharing about his meeting with The Elders. Nine retired national leaders whom meet on ocassion to discuss current events. It was a privilege to pray and petition to The King of kings in presence of a United States President. Praise the Lord and thank you, Mr. President.
Still teaching at 95, Jimmy Carter draws devotees
(11 Nov 2019) Former President Jimmy Carter can still draw a crowd, and he does each time he teaches Sunday school in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Nearly four decades after he left office and despite a body that's failing after 95 years, the nation's oldest-ever ex-president still teaches Sunday school roughly twice monthly at Maranatha Baptist Church.
Pilgrims come by the hundreds for what they describe as a dose of simple decency and devotion in a Bible lesson. They gather hours before class begins.
The church has only 30 or so members, but as many as 450 people are on hand any week Carter teaches.
It's unclear how much longer Carter can continue to teach, but Maranatha Baptist pastor Tony Lowden says he's welcome as long as he's able.
