Yosemite • WALKING THROUGH TREES! Giant Sequoias
Walking among (and through) the 2,000 year-old giant sequoias of the Tuolumne Grove.
Mariposa Grove, right near the south entrance to Yosemite, is closed until 2017 for rehabilitation. It really is a more impressive grove of giant sequoias. Not to take anything away from the Tuolumne Grove. It has some stunning trees, and is a great way to get up close to some of them. If you sensed any disappointment in not being able to get into the Mariposa Grove, it's because that was where I say my first giant sequoia. It was a powerful experience. Photos simply do not do the experience any justice.
Tuolumne Grove is only about 20 minutes from the Yosemite Valley, so it is a more convenient trip than the Mariposa Grove, which is about 1.5 hours from the valley. There is a 1.1 mile hike (on a paved road) into the grove. It's a gradual downhill (on the way there). Once you get into the grove, there is a network of smaller trails that take you to the various giants.
The tunnel in that you see in the video, was carved out in the 1800's as a tourist attraction. It's the first such tree to be tunneled for automobiles to pass through. The tree was over 2,000 years old (possibly 3,000) when it was tunneled. This lead to it's demise, less than a century later. As humans, we suck sometimes.
One of my favorite stories about a giant sequoia is Walter Fry. He was on a team of five men in charge of cutting down a sequoia for lumber. It took the five men five days to cut the tree down. Once it had fallen, Fry counted the rings to see how old the tree was. He was astonished to find that the tree that they had taken down in just a few days, had lived for 3,266 years. He was so moved and sickened by his act of destruction that he changed careers and became a park ranger. In 1912, he became superintendent of Sequoia National Parks, charged with protecting the things that he had ignorantly destroyed.

TUOLUMNE SEQUOIA GROVE - YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
#YosemiteNationalPark #NationalParks #NorthernCalifornia #Tuolumne #Merced #Mariposa #SequoiaGroves #SequoiaTrees #JeepLife
There are three Sequoia groves in Yosemite National Park – Tuolumne, Merced, and Mariposa groves. We were able to visit two of them during our stay – Tuolumne and a short stop at Mariposa on our way home. This is a look at one of the groves.
We camped for two nights at Crane Flats Campground in Yosemite National Park. Not far from our campground is the Tuolumne Sequoia Grove. We drove the short distance to the parking lot of the grove and started our hike.
Tuolumne Grove is at an elevation of 6,200 feet and the trail is 3.2 miles round trip. It is a chilly October morning as we begin our hike.
Sequoia Trees
Sequoia trees are rare trees and only grow along a narrow strip on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. They are found at an elevation of 5,000 to 7,000 feet. Giant Sequoias are among the oldest trees in the world and can live up to 3,000 years.
Giant Sequoias are fire-resistant and insect-resistant because of their thick bark. They are tall trees, but normally 300 feet is as tall as most of them grow. They are also massive in size and until recently the Giant Sequoia named “General Sherman” was thought to be the largest organism on the planet.
Shallow Root System
One downside to the Giant Sequoia trees is that they have a wide, but shallow root system. Because of this many are toppled by a combination of heavy rains and strong winds. An otherwise healthy Sequoia tree can be easily toppled by a severe weather storm.
Another problem is people walking too close to the trees can inadvertently kill the root system and make them more vulnerable to toppling.
Interesting Trees
There are two unique dead trees in the park – one has a tunnel cut through it and you can walkthrough the tunnel. The top of the tree is missing, however. Another fallen Giant Sequoia tree you can walk through it, as the inside has been hollowed out.
Conclusion
Tuolumne Grove was a great stop to hike and to see the Giant Sequoias, as well as to read about some of the features and history of the Sequoias. The Giant Sequoias trees and the Sierra Nevada Mountains seemed to be made for each other!
We will see YOU on the next adventure!

Yosemite's Mariposa Grove- Winter Camping Among Giant Sequoias
Yosemite Day Trip #3 Yosemite's Mariposa Grove and Grizzly Giant Tree
Yosemite National Park - RV Living
Next stop - Yosemite National Park!! There are 5 main areas within Yosemite; Yosemite Valley, Mariposa Grove, Glacier Point, Tuolumne Meadows and Hetch Hetchy, and we decide we're going to see all 5! We set up camp at Hodgdon Meadow Campground and get started exploring. The first stop is to Mariposa Grove to see the giant Sequoias, on our way back we catch a beautiful sunset at Tunnel View. We drive through Yosemite Valley with awe-inspiring views of Half Dome and El Capitan and hike the Mist Trail up, up, up to Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls. We find a dog-friendly paved trail at Glacier Point and are awarded with our best view of Half Dome, ending our week with a drive up Tioga Pass to Tuolumne Meadows and down the sketch sketchy road to Hetch Hetchy (heyo!) where we learn about the O'Shaughnessy Dam. It was a bit of an ambitious challenge that included countless miles and hours of driving, but we can now check Yosemite National Park off the list!

Yosemite's Tuolumne Grove
Walk among the giant Sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park. The Tuolumne Grove is only a 30 minute drive from the Valley Floor and a one mile hike downhill to the grove. A day-trip which is well worth it.
The grove parking lot is one mile past the Crane Flat Gas station on the Tioga Road.
Yosemite National Park - Giant Sequoia - Merced Grove
This spectacular tree may be found in Merced Grove. It is unique because it has a large cave on its side that has been charred by fire. No need to worry, these trees need fire to survive. Giant sequoias are amongst the world's largest trees. They may grow over 270 ft. Some tree has been recorded at 311 ft. The oldest known sequoias are 3,500 years old. .

The Giant Trees of Yosemite National Park
Most of Yosemite National Park is blanketed with vast forests, and with abundant precipitation and warm temperatures, these mountains are home to the largest trees in the world including the Giant Sequoias, the world's largest single trees by volume.
With necks-turned-straight-up, grove visitors often ask: How old is that tree? So, just how long can certain Yosemite tree species live? Whitebark pine, Western juniper and Douglas-fir can live more than 1,000 years while giant sequoias can live more than 3,000 years.
Yosemite National Park's massive giant sequoias live in three groves in the park. The most easily accessible of these is the Mariposa Grove near the park's South Entrance, off of the Wawona Road (Highway 41). Two smaller—and less visited—groves are the Tuolumne and Merced groves near Crane Flat. The Mariposa Grove contains about 500 mature giant sequoias including Yosemite's famous Grizzly Giant, best estimated to be 1,800 years old plus or minus a few centuries, which is nothing to a giant sequoia.
Yosemite National Park covers nearly 1,200 square miles of mountainous terrain in the Sierra Nevada of California. From high peaks and deep canyons to ancient forests and quiet meadows, the diversity of the world is on display here. At Yosemite you can see the tranquillity of the High Sierra, the power of glaciers, giant sequoia groves, thundering waterfalls, clear streams and much more. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is also home to hundreds of wildlife and plant species. Two Wild & Scenic Rivers, the Tuolumne and Merced rivers, begin in the park and flow west to the Central Valley. Visitors experience the park's 800 miles of hiking trails and 282 miles of road.
Visitors fall in love with the park's many waterfalls, specifically 2,425-foot Yosemite Falls that ranks as the tallest in North America, flowing down into the scenic Valley meadows. Hikers take notice of the enormous granite mountains from the 8,842-foot Half Dome to the 13,114-foot Mt. Lyell-Yosemite's tallest peak. Glaciers, which John Muir sought out in California as well as Alaska, add into the mix with the Maclure and Lyell still intact.
Wildlife species typically found include mule deer, black bear, bobcat, gray fox, mountain kingsnake, Gilbert's skink, white-headed woodpecker, brown creeper, spotted owl, and a wide variety of bat species.
Plants: Move up or down in elevation and feel as though you are in another park. Vegetation changes from oak woodlands to chaparral scrublands to lower montane to upper montane to subalpine to alpine. Those who step into the alpine zone can see krummholz whitebark pines and perhaps a western juniper or mountain hemlock.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
Yosemite is open all year, though some areas of the park are inaccessible by car from approximately November through May due to snow.
Distances and Driving Times From: San Francisco/Bay area (195 mi, 4-5 hours); Sacramento (176 mi, 4 hours); Reno & Lake Tahoe (June through October, conditions permitting, 218 mi, 5 hours/All year, 315 mi, 8 hours); Los Angeles area (313 mi, 6 hours); San Diego area (441 mi, 8 hours); Las Vegas (June through October, conditions permitting, 642 km, 8 hours / November through May, 797 km, 8-10 hours)
Drivers can enter Yosemite National Park by several routes:
From the West and Most Scenic: CA Hwy 140
This route is by far the most scenic drive into Yosemite National Park and the best way to go if you're visiting for the first time. It's open most of the time and passes through the towns of Mariposa and Fish Camp. It's also a popular route for people driving to Yosemite from the San Jose area.
From the West: CA Hwy 120
Open most any time, this route goes through Oakdale and Groveland and is often used by visitors from the San Francisco Bay area and northern California. It passes through fruit and almond orchards, small agricultural towns, fruit stands and ranches in the rolling foothills before ascending sharply up the Priest Grade to Big Oak Flat and the old gold mining town of Groveland.
From the South: CA Hwy 41
From US Hwy 99 at Fresno, Hwy 41 runs north and west toward Yosemite's South Entrance, which takes you through the towns of Oakhurst and Fish Camp and into the park near the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias and Wawona.
From the East: CA Hwy 120 and Tioga Pass
To find out more about traveling this route, average opening and closing dates, check the guide to the Tioga Pass.
From the East: Other Mountain Passes
Other mountain passes that can get you across the Sierras near Yosemite include the Sonora Pass (CA Hwy 108), Monitor Pass (CA Hwy 89) and Ebbetts Pass (CA Hwy 4). Snow may also close these routes in winter, but they are sometimes open when Tioga Pass is still snow-clogged.

Yosemite Tioga Pass
In the mood for a daydream? Join us as we explore Tioga Pass at Yosemite. We spent the night at Moraine Campground in Inyo National Park. In the morning we passed through Tuolumne Meadows and walked out on Olmstead Point. In the afternoon we hiked the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias.
As we left Yosemite, we drove through thick smoke from the Mariposa County fire that ultimately took out over 80,000 acres of forest and dozens of homes and structures.
In the evening, we washed our RV. By this time, we had been on the road since Thursday, July 13th, driving dry and dusty roads through Nevada and Utah. The RV really needed to be cleaned.

Giant Sequoia Trees | Yosemite National Park | The Biggest Living Things On Earth
Take a hike with us among giant trees in Yosemite National Park!
DETAILS ON THIS HIKE:
Giant Sequoias are at the very heart and soul of our public lands. In 1864 President Abraham Lincoln signed the Mariposa Grove (now located within Yosemite National Park) into federal protection for, “public use, resort, and recreation” marking the first time in the history of the United States that land was set aside for protection and preservation, kicking off the National Parks movement.
