Choteua City Park Campground in Choteau Montana is a city managed park providing inexpensive camping for a 3 day limit to travelers passing through town (usually heading to or coming from Glacier National Park). A mix of larger and smaller RV sites on mowed natural grass/ weeds there are two camping sections. The first is out in front and will be the first you see on approach; these sites are not as pretty. If you circle around to the back past the bathrooms and next to the ball fields are a bunch of large sites tucked in among old growth trees; prettier and quieter.
The city park has a walking path, playground, and the aforementioned bathroom and ball fields. Nothing fancy but suitable for a short stay. There is a water fill in the front section along with a dump station. As of 2016 the nightly rate was $8 paid to the iron ranger.
Choteua is a rural farming community with a small downtown area.

Choteau Mountain View Campground in Choteau Montana offers 20 tent sites and 49 full hookup RV sites as well as 3 small cabins. In the main building, campers can access washers and dryers, a newly updated shower/bathroom facility, a game room, Internet lounge and eventually a gift shop that will also have RV and camping supplies and basic grocery items.
The park is located just outside the small town of Choteau with its rural feel and farming community style. The RV sites are huge with a series of large pull thrus that can allow groups to line up nose to tail. In addition there are backins and standard pull thrus. Gravel roads and natural grass/ plants set the tone. A small playground is also available.

The Hi-Line Theatre in Rudyard has been remodeled – the original marquee is back in place. Carl Mehmke was inducted into the steam engine hall of fame; he died in March 2009. The pet cemetery near Great Falls continues to grow.

Storm chasing in Montana with Tempest Storm Chasing Tours.

June 28th has to be the most incredible day I have had storm chasing. We started the day in Belle Fourche, just 50 miles from where we would later be watching an incredible supercell near Albion, Montana. After lunch in Buffalo, South Dakota and some time looking at data in Rhame, North Dakota, the decision was made to head back to Buffalo and then head west into Montana. We soon had a view of the developing storm more than 50 miles away and before long driving along good gravel roads we had arrived at our storm. The structure was already mind blowing! We stood watching the storm approach us for around 45 minutes before things started to ramp up a bit and the first tornado appeared. The first tornado lasted several minutes and was hidden by the rain at times. We didn't hang around long as the storm was just getting going with the tornado show. We jumped back on Camp Crook Road towards Capitol to keep up with the storm, it now had a huge lowered base on it and very quickly tornado number two begun. By the time we stopped, the tornado had taken on a beautiful classic tornado shape as it slowly moved across the open fields. We watched for several minutes then moved again to keep up with the action area. Once tornado two was over, things started to look a little more serious, the motion in the storm directly above and in front of us was unbelievable and the storm looked like it was about to produce a large tornado directly in front of us. By the time we had stopped tornado three was about to make contact with the ground and we stood and watched it become a fairly large wedge shaped tornado. We had a good amount of time just watching in awe as the sky made contact with the ground, we could even hear the tornado rumble as it moved across the fields. It was soon time to move again to keep up with the tornado along Camp Crook Road. As we drove along the road towards the storm what I saw in front of me was beyond mind blowing! The whole storm structure was spinning around the tornado like a small hurricane, I couldn't believe my eyes. This only lasted a few moments but it was enough to feel completely overwhelmed by what I saw. We continued to follow the tornado until it roped out in the rain and hail. Very soon after the fourth tornado started, by this time the sun had set and the contrast was quite low but we still enjoyed watching another distant twister on the open Plains. It was now dark and the storm was currently sitting over Road 20 between us and Buffalo, we sat watching the lightning waiting for the storm to move on a little before heading East to Buffalo. Before long somebody shouted Tornado!!! And there was tornado number 5 hidden in the dark only made visible by the frequent lightning. We all desperately tried to capture this incredible moment before it faded away, it felt quite surreal. Then the day was done, the storm was dying and the celebration dinner was calling. We drove back to Belle Fourche where we had started the day what felt like a lifetime ago, I got into my hotel room and set my bags down and suddenly felt completely overwhelmed by the days events. I said to myself out loud 'Did that really just happen?' Everything I had spent my days dreaming about as a young kid in high school had unfolded before my eyes. For real this time!

Freezeout Lake in the heart of Big Sky country is just a temporary staging area for the great snow geese migration where as many as 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans gather and rest up before flying further north. They will only be at Freezeout Lake a short time, recuperating from their nearly 1,000 mile journey from California and the Gulf of Mexico before they head further north to Alberta and central Saskatchewan, Canada. In Canada they will join hundreds of thousands of other snow geese from Texas and other Gulf Coast States. In a series of shorter flights, the geese will then make their way to nesting grounds on the wind swept, extreme northwest Arctic coast of Canada.
If you are into birding and bird watching this is an amazing event to witness and one of the great things about it, is that there are very few people around. The snow goose migration is spectacular. Join us as we view it through our lens as tens of thousands of snow geese at Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area near Fairfield, Montana, are leaving to visit the nearby grain fields and then returning to Freezeout Lake each morning and afternoon.
Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area is 40 miles west of Great Falls and has become one of the most spectacular waterfowl viewing areas in Montana. It is a prairie jewel preserved for those whose hearts are stirred by whistling wings, wind and water (MTFWP website).
Once the great snow geese migration begins and they start showing up at Freezeout Lake, you can call Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks to get updates on when the snow geese and tundra swans begin arriving, and numbers of geese and swans being seen on a daily basis so that if you decide to visit, you can ensure that there will be large numbers of birds there. Call their hotline, 24 hours a day at (406) 467-2646.
Best Viewing Times (all are approximations):
• 1st flyout - at sunrise, the lighting is the best at this time
• 1st flyin - late morning, around 10:00 or 11:00
• 2nd flyout - mid to late afternoon, around 4:00 or 5:00
• 2nd flyin - around dark
The annual migration of snow geese near Choteau, Montana is a sight to behold. Snow geese at freezeout lake wildlife management area, highway 89, located between Fairfield and Choteau, Montana leaving to feed in the nearby fields and then returning.
