    Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds. The castle was intended as a home for the king, until he died in 1886. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer.

The lake has just under five kilometres of shoreline and a depth of up to 62 metres. It is a popular tourist attraction, given its proximity to the castles and the wild swans that inhabit the lake. Boats are available for rent and there is a wide variety of hiking trails in the vicinity. A circular path leads around the shore, and the Fürstenstrasse leads from Hohenschwangau over the Schwarzenberg ridge and down to Pinswang in the Lechtal.
