Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds. The castle was intended as a home for the king, until he died in 1886. It was open to the public shortly after his death. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer.

This area of Germany is one of the most charming and picturesque places in the world, made better by the fact that the town we stayed in is literally called ANGER lol. The district is called Berchtesgadener Land - literally, mountain garden land.

I love coming to this region, which is a unique mix of pristine natural beauty, provincial charm, and technological advancement. While we spend most of our time in Bavaria visiting family, this time we took a side trip to see Neuschwanstein, a 19th century palace built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. It served as the inspiration for the castle in Disney's Sleeping Beauty, so obviously it looked like something out of a dream.

Es sind die Heimatstätten des Allgäus, in denen sich der Geist frei entfalten konnte, oftmals unabhängig von Landesherren und Leibeigenschaft. Die Freiheit führte zu einer unbändigen Gestaltungslust, die sich in den Bauwerken der Gotik, der Renaissance und des Barock zeigt. Auch das Handwerk und der Handel konnten sich ungehindert entfalten und sorgten für den Reichtum, der sich in schmucken Patrizierhäusern widerspiegelt. Ein Besuch einer Veranstaltung oder Stadtführung in unseren Städten darf also nicht fehlen, denn hier liegen Geschichten versteckt, die vor Urzeiten begannen und bis heute erzählt werden.

Bis Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts regierten im Allgäu rund 150 geistliche und weltliche Herrscher und versuchten sich gegenseitig in Prunksucht zu übertreffen. Was davon blieb, ist eine Fülle schönster Bauten.

Am 11.01.2019 schneite es auch in Forchheim in Oberfranken sehr viel #Schnee. Anders als beim #Schneechaos in den Alpen hielt sich aber das Schneechaos in Grenzen.
So konnte ich bei meinem Schneelauf trotz des starken Schneefalls das schöne Winterwunderland in vollen Zügen genießen.
