Le Trou de Bozouls in The South of France Sits at The Top of a 300ft-Deep Horseshoe-Shaped Canyon
The town of Bozouls in the south of France sits on the edge of a huge canyon that's around 300 feet deep. The unique geography of the area came about 2 million years ago when glaciers advanced and receded. Over the years this and the ebb and flow of rivers slowly eroded the rock, creating a huge gouge.
The town of Bozouls is one place you'd never want to find yourself stumbling around late at night in without a torch.
The commune in the Aveyron region of south France sits at the top of a 300ft-deep horseshoe-shaped canyon, known locally as 'le Trou de Bozouls'.
The unique geography of the area came about two million years ago, when a turbulent time in global temperatures resulted in glaciers advancing and receding, and rivers rising and falling.
The town of Bozouls is built on a limestone plateau and the river Dordeau de Conques runs straight through it.
Over the years, the ebb and flow of the water has slowly eroded the rock, creating a huge gouge in the landscape.
Bozouls' geographical location made it a natural defensive stronghold.
Thanks to the protective lay of the land, humans have built settlements in the area for thousands of years, using the limestone rock to create their dwellings.
Making the most of the natural defence that the canyon provided, a castle was built in the 9th century, but only its ruins remain today.
The town is only accessible from the south and in medieval times this route was monitored 24 hours a day by guards in two medieval towers.
Nowadays, the 12th century Ste Fauste church is the most famous building, where it sits right on the edge of the cliff above the river.

In Part 2 of this video series about traveling the waterways of France on a tug boat, Richard Goodwin visits the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame the centre of Parisian history for the last thousand years. We talk to a lamp maker and repairer and go to a picnic on the Pont des Arts and finally end up at a café with cabaret and which is run by a famous retired rugby player and listen to the girls singing to their evocative accordeon..
