Places to see in ( Nimes - France ) Cathedrale Notre Dame Et Saint Castor de Nimes
Nîmes Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Nîmes, France. The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to the local Saint Castor of Apt. The cathedral was the seat of the Bishops of Nîmes until 1877, when the name of the diocese was changed. It is still the seat of their successors the Bishops of Nîmes (–Uzès and Alès). The cathedral is believed to stand on the site of the former temple of Augustus. It is partly Romanesque and partly Gothic in style.
The Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Nîmes , in the French department of Gard in the Occitan region. Dedicated to Castor d'Apt , it is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Nîmes, Uzès and Alès. The cathedral has known three successive states.
A cathedral Romance , built on the site of older buildings (especially the Roman period), was consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II , though the work certainly encroached on the xii th century. From this period, there remain some facades of walls: a gable-wall surmounted by an old bell-wall leaning against the current bell tower which housed the first bells. The facade is punctuated, in part, by Lombard arches, and a triangular antique pediment typical of Provençal Romanesque art , housing on the left a suite in bas - relief of the Old Testament . During the wars of religionNotre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor was seriously damaged twice by the Reformed in 1567 and 1621 .
One of the two steeples of its so-called Treasury Tower facade, to the south, comparable to the Fenestrelle tower in Uzès, was destroyed, except that it was square and higher than the second one. According to the plans of Poldo oF Albenas the xvi th century and had the twin arches (as in Uzes). It is the Protestants who participated financially in the reconstruction of the nave. Only the northwest tower escaped destruction, serving as an observation post.
The north tower, whose top floor is Gothic is completed by a roof terrace which is accessed by a turret with a spiral staircase, is about 40 m high . The vaulted height of the nave is 20 m . This is not a large building since the nave is only 55 meters long. The building is surpassed on the surface by the Saint - Baudile church .
The organ of the cathedral was built from 1643 by Gaspard and André Eustache at the request of the Bishop of Nîmes; from this period dates the large buffet whose sculptures were made by Christophe Noiratte from Marseille and Michel Péru from Avignon who carved the two cherubs flanking the cornice of the large central turret and the three saints summoning the coronation of the grand-corps.

The third section of the Le Puy Way, the Via Podiensis, takes pilgrims from the magical village of Conques to medieval Cahors; with the Lot River wrapped around the city’s historic centre. Conques and Cahors are probably two of the most beautiful towns of the whole Le Puy Camino route.
This is a wonderful stretch of the Le Puy Way, taking walkers along forest tracks, lush farmland and rolling hills where you will enjoy magnificent views. Also on this section, pilgrims will cross the Causses du Quercy natural park and pass the 3,500 year old dolmen of Pech Loglaire; as well as the oldest stone cross in the whole Le Puy Camino route.
The Camino in France is marked as a GR Route with red and white stripes; as well as the traditional scallop shell and yellow markings.
