Horseshoe Bay to Burnaby: Then and Now (1966 & 2017)
The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has been providing some amazing film footage of BC's highways from 1966, including the drive from Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) to New Burnaby. Thanks to them for making this footage available for us to enjoy.
I thought it would be fun project to shoot the same route in 2017, and highlight the differences between 'then and now'. So, I created a side by side view showing a comparison of the route, about 51 years later years later.
Some notes:
- The 2017 video was shot on November 4, 2017.
- The 1966 video is unedited, however small sections of the 2017 video have been cut (mostly due to so much traffic slowing down the drive).
- I did my best to sync the video wherever possible using landmarks and road alignments (bridges, streets, buildings, etc) as freeze frames, allowing for a great visual comparison of the old and new footage. The speed of the video varies throughout, slowing down for our landmarks.
- If you wish, you can slow down by clicking on the gear shaped icon in the bottom right corner of the video screen, then click “Speed” and choose your desired speed.

Vancouver Island 2017 (Pt. 2) - Craft Beer at the Bard & Banker, Victoria, BC
September 19, 2017 - I've been to Victoria a number of times over the years, and one favourite spot for me to check out is the Bard & Banker, a great pub on Government Street in the heart of Downtown Victoria's tourist district.
The building opened in 1885 as the Bank of British Columbia, and remained as a bank for 103 years until 1988. At some point it was also hosted the first legislative assembly in British Columbia, prior to the building of the BC Legislature just down the street.
I love the ornate lighting within this place.

1907 Victoria, BC
A 3 minute cinematograph taken on May 4,1907 in Victoria, B.C. The fellow who filmed it, William H. Harbeck, also filmed the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906. Harbeck was a passenger on the Titanic but did not survive. The last bit of the film (at about the 2 minute part) shows (a glimpse of) the building of the Empress Hotel. Looks like a tram ride down Government Street as they end up at the Harbour.
