St. Peter's Square is a large plaza located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, the papal enclave inside Rome, directly west of the neighbourhood or rione of Borgo. Both the square and the basilica are named after Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus and the first Catholic Pope. At the centre of the square is an ancient Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current site in 1586. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square almost 100 years later, including the massive Doric colonnades, four columns deep, which embrace visitors in the maternal arms of Mother Church. A granite fountain constructed by Bernini in 1675 matches another fountain designed by Carlo Maderno in 1613.

Hersey Band Trip to Italy - Concert 2 of 3

The John Hersey High School bands performed three concerts in Italy during the summer of 2013. This video presents the second of the concerts, performed on the west side of Rome at the Chiostro del Buon Pastore (Cloister of the Good Shepard) on June 13th.

Claire Hynes, Class of 2013, was a featured soloist.

While each of the concert locations certainly had their own unique merits, this venue was the most visually interesting, and provided the best acoustics of the three concerts.

Anyone considering a visit should definitely use public transportation rather than waiting for a called taxi to show up, by the way!

Triumph tiger 800xca in Rome...even better... motorcycle heaven north of Rome

During my staying in Italy I was able to get my hands on a Triumph Tiger 800 XCa, so I went on riding the awesome curvy streets on the northern outskirts of Rome.
The triumph was a pleasure to ride and the triple engine was near perfect for those twisty roads.
